Berat Castle, known locally as Kala or Kalaja, sits on Gorica Hill above the Osum River in Berat, Albania. Its oldest parts date to the 4th century BC, but most of what stands today dates from the 13th century, when Byzantine and Ottoman rulers shaped it. What sets it apart is that families still live inside the walls. You can wander cobbled lanes past Byzantine churches, the ruins of a mosque and small cafes, then climb to the lookout for a wide view over the town. Go at sunset for the best light.
From the 4th century BC to today

The hill has been fortified since the 4th century BC. Over the centuries, Illyrians, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans all held the site, and each left a mark on the walls and buildings.
The castle is now protected as part of the Historic Centre of Berat, which UNESCO lists as a World Heritage Site. Its walls and monuments date from different periods, so you can see several building styles within a short walk.
Living inside the walls

Families still live in the stone houses inside the castle. You will see laundry hanging between buildings, children playing in the lanes and older residents sitting at their doorsteps.
Some homes have been turned into guesthouses, and a number of small cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops line the streets. Because these are people's homes, keep to the lanes and be considerate when you pass through courtyards.
Churches, mosque ruins and the Onufri Museum
The Byzantine churches inside the walls include small chapels with frescoes and icons. Several are still places of worship, so keep your voice low and dress modestly when you go inside.
The ruins of the Red Mosque, built for the Ottoman garrison, are among the remains of Ottoman rule. The Onufri Museum is housed in a centuries-old church and displays religious art, including icons linked to the Onufri family of painters.
The museum is a good place to pause before or after the walk. Plan time for it if you want to see the icons up close.
Walking the walls and the views
The castle walls are wide enough to walk along in places. From the lookout you can see the Osum valley, the old quarters of Mangalem and Gorica, and the hills beyond the town.
The lookout is the main reason many visitors make the climb. Sunset brings warm light to the white houses below. Toilets inside the site are limited, so plan before you go up.
