Pick the coast first. Duong Dong and Long Beach on the west suit first visits, food and sunsets. Ong Lang is a low-key strip just north. Ganh Dau and the north suit quiet beaches and resort days, and Bai Sao and An Thoi in the south suit island hopping. The tourism board describes a 30-day visa-free stay on the island, so check the rule for your passport before you book.

How to choose a base in Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is an island with about 150 km of coastline, and the coast you sleep on shapes the trip more than the room does. The Phu Quoc travel guide covers the island's beaches, food and national park, and this page settles the bed. It also fits into a wider Vietnam trip, where Phu Quoc is usually the beach finish after Saigon or the Mekong Delta.

Three questions drive the choice. The first is what a normal day looks like. If it is a swim, a seafood dinner and a sunset drink, the west coast near Duong Dong has everything on foot. If it is a boat day to the southern islands, the south is closer. If it is a quiet beach and a resort pool, the north suits better. The second is transport. The tourism board lists motorbike rental, local taxis, minibuses and tour coaches as ways to get around, and a scooter changes what is possible, but it adds risk and needs a valid license and insurance cover. The third is the season, because the west coast is the place for sunsets and the dry months from about November to March are calmest.

Price bands below are per night for a double room: $ is a simple guesthouse, $$ a mid-range hotel or bungalow, $$$ an upscale resort. Rates change quickly with the season, so none are quoted here. Check the final price, including breakfast and transfers, at booking.

Which coast: the first decision

The west coast is the island's social side. The tourism board calls Long Beach a 20 km stretch of sand trailing up the western coast, and the most popular sunset destination on the island, with cafes and bars that often host DJs or live bands. The north is quieter, with forest and national park mountains behind the sand and few high-rise buildings near the shore. The south has the white sand of Sao Beach and the harbor area at An Thoi, where boats and a long cable car reach the southern islands.

Sao Beach, Phu Quoc Island: green palm trees near beach umbrellas during daytime
Sao Beach, Phu Quoc Island

For a first trip of four or five days, one base is usually enough, with taxis or tours for the rest. If you have a week, consider splitting it: three nights on the west coast for food and sunsets, then two in the south or the north for quiet beaches. The island is small enough to cross in a short taxi ride, so moving costs time but not a full day.

The tourism board describes a 30-day visa-free stay on Phu Quoc for foreigners, including those who transit a Vietnamese entry point and go straight on to the island, and state media calls it a policy for direct international arrivals. Check your passport in the visa checker, and read the Vietnam e-visa and exemption guide if your plans include Saigon or Hanoi.

1. Duong Dong and Long Beach

Best for

Evenings
Night market, bars, live music
Price band
$$

Duong Dong is the island's main town and the easiest base. The harbor, the Dinh Cau shrine and the night market are here, and Long Beach runs along the coast beside it. The tourism board describes the night market on Bach Dang Street as pedestrian-only in the evening, with stalls selling souvenirs and fresh seafood, and the promenade beside it as a good place to watch tour boats and locals out in the evening air. Dinh Cau is a shrine on a small islet at the river mouth, reached by a short climb of 29 steps, and a favorite place to watch the sun go down.

Long Beach is where evenings are. The tourism board points to its bars, cafes and restaurants, and its sunset over the sea, as the main reasons to stay on the west coast. A room within a short walk of the beach and a taxi rank is the best use of a first trip, because you can reach dinner, the night market and boat pickups without a vehicle.

The trade-offs are crowds and noise. The strip is busy at night. Ask for a room away from the main road or a beach bar if you sleep lightly. Because the beach is long, a few hundred meters can change the feel, so check where a property sits on the strip, not just the name of the beach.

Duong Dong also works as a base for day trips, since the tourism board puts Rach Vem and its starfish beach about 20 km north of town. If you want one base for a long stay without moving, this is it.

Evite se you want a quiet beach or low-rise calm. Ong Lang is a short ride north, and the north and south are quieter still.

2. Ong Lang

Best for
Couples, slower stays
Getting around
Taxi or scooter to town
Evenings
Cafes and quiet bays
Price band
$$

Ong Lang lies just north of Duong Dong and its busy harbor. The tourism board describes crescent-shaped sandy bays separated by slabs of black volcanic rock, with a thin white-sand shore backed by fertile land and orchards, and palm trees shading cafes and restaurants. It has no high-rise buildings, which gives it a low-key, grassroots atmosphere, but the roads are paved and Western food and cocktails are easy to find.

That mix makes Ong Lang a good choice for couples and for anyone who wants a slower stay without losing access to town. You can swim in the morning, eat at a beachside cafe and take a taxi to Duong Dong for the night market. The sunset from the sand is a draw, with trees to one side and volcanic rock to the north and south, and a small path leads to the Nguyen Trung Truc shrine, where locals leave incense.

The trade-offs are the beach style and the access. The bays are smaller and rockier than Long Beach, so they suit a walk and a paddle more than a long swim, and you rely on a short taxi or scooter ride to reach town. Check the water access from your property, since rocks can limit entry in places.

Evite se you want wide, open sand for long walks or a lively evening scene on the doorstep. Long Beach or Sao Beach give you that.

Stay here for quiet bays, if a short taxi or scooter ride to town is fine.

3. Ganh Dau and the north

Best for
Families, resort days, nature
Getting around
Taxi, tour coach or scooter
Evenings
Mostly your resort
Price band
$$$

The north is where Phu Quoc turns quiet. The tourism board describes Ganh Dau as a remote counterpart to Long Beach's bustle, with mountains that rise steeply behind the sand and enclose calm, shallow water. Because of that and the lack of nearby construction, it calls the cape an exceptional patch of peace, and notes that it is the closest point on the island to Cambodia, with the islands across the water visible on a clear day. Much of the northern part of the island is forest and Phu Quoc National Park, where marked trails, a coral garden and Suoi Tranh waterfall are all within reach.

The north also has large resort and theme park complexes. The tourism board describes a family-oriented complex with a stretch of shoreline, a water park, a golf course and a large theme park with rides and shows. That suits families who want everything in one place, and it suits couples who want a long pool day with the beach nearby.

The trade-off is isolation. The north is a longer drive from Duong Dong and the airport, so dinner out, the night market and most tours need a taxi or coach. Resorts here tend to run their own restaurants and activities, so check what is included and what a ride to town costs. In the wetter months the north can feel remote, so check weather and transfers before you commit to a long stay.

Evite se you plan to eat out in town every night or to move between sights without a vehicle. Duong Dong or Ong Lang are better.

4. Bai Sao and An Thoi

Best for
Island hopping, beach days

Quiet; a few beach restaurants

The south is the island-hopping end. Sao Beach lies near An Thoi town, about 25 km from the center according to the tourism board, with more than 7 km of white sand lined with palms and forest. Visitors often spend a whole day there, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, kite surfing or fishing, and there are restaurants along the sand. The tourism board adds that it is also the best part of the island for sunrise.

Phu Quoc National Park, Phu Quoc Island: Boats docked at a pier on a tropical island
Phu Quoc National Park, Phu Quoc Island

An Thoi is the harbor for the An Thoi Archipelago, and the starting point for boat trips to islands with reefs and white beaches. The board names islands such as Mong Tay, Gam Ghi, May Rut, Thom and Dam Ngang as typical stops, and a long cable car links An Thoi to Hon Thom. Staying close to the harbor means an earlier start and a shorter transfer on a boat day.

The trade-off is distance and evenings. The south is far from Duong Dong's restaurants and night market, so most of your evenings are at the property or a beach restaurant. That suits divers, snorkelers and travelers who want long beach days, and it is less suited to travelers who want a choice of dinners. Check the transport back from your last meal, since taxis can be scarce late.

Evite se you need nightlife and a long list of restaurants, or want to start each day in Duong Dong. Stay on the west coast and take a day trip south.

Worth it for early island trips from the harbor, if quiet evenings suit you.

Compare the four coasts

The table below puts the four bases side by side. For a first trip the choice is usually between the first and last rows, and a split stay of three nights in the west and two in the south or north often beats staying in one place.

When to book and which months to choose

The tourism board says Phu Quoc is warm all year, with an average temperature around 27°C, and that it is coolest in the dry season between October and March and hottest in April and May, when the rain begins. The rains are established by July and cool the island until October, which is why beach days, boat trips and room demand all cluster in the dry months.

For the dry season, and for weekends and holidays, book as early as your plans allow, particularly on the west coast and in the resort areas of the north. In the wetter months you can often book closer to the date, but check boat schedules, since rough water can cancel trips to the southern islands. Choose a refundable rate where you can, especially if you travel between June and October, when storms are more likely.

Flights and ferries also affect the timing. The tourism board lists direct daily flights from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Can Tho and Da Nang, and daily ferries from Rach Gia and Ha Tien. If you arrive by ferry, check the current operator and schedule before you book.

Mistakes to avoid when booking

The first mistake is picking a hotel by photo without checking the beach. Some stretches are rocky, shallow or lined with boats, so read what the property says about swimming and ask which direction the sunset faces. The second is booking the north or south without a transport plan. A long taxi every evening adds cost and time, so ask what the property offers.

The third is assuming a single base covers everything. The island is big enough that a day trip from one end to the other is a long day, and a split stay often makes more sense. The fourth is ignoring the visa rule. The 30-day policy is specific to Phu Quoc, so if your plans reach beyond the island, check what your passport needs for the rest of the trip. The fifth is renting a scooter without a plan for the license and the insurance. Check your policy and the local rules before you ride.

Who should not choose the north or south

Skip the north or south if you rely on public transport, arrive late at night, or want to eat out in a lively area every evening. Taxis can be scarce after dark, and you may end up eating at the property every night. Choose Duong Dong or Ong Lang instead, and visit the quieter beaches on a day trip.

A beach with palm trees and a boat in the water, Phu Quoc Island
A beach with palm trees and a boat in the water, Phu Quoc Island

Skip the west coast if your priority is silence. The strip is busy, and the beach clubs and bars run late. In that case, look at Ong Lang for a gentler version, or the north for a resort that sits away from the main road.

Money, phone and cover for an island stay

Carry cash in small notes for taxis, markets and small restaurants, since small businesses on the island often take only cash. Set up your phone before you land: an eSIM for Vietnam gives you maps, taxi apps and your booking details on arrival. A travel insurance policy with medical and cancellation cover is worth having for an island trip, since boat days, scooters and flight changes all carry some risk.

For ideas on how to spend your days once you have a base, see Phu Quoc in 3 days, and for a comparison with the mainland coast, Phu Quoc or Nha Trang. If you want a quieter island trip from the south, the Con Dao Islands guide covers another option, and getting around Vietnam explains how flights and ferries fit into a longer route.

Perguntas frequentes

Where is the best place to stay in Phu Quoc for a first visit?

Duong Dong and Long Beach on the west coast. They combine the island's main town, the night market, sunset bars and easy tours, and you can add quieter beaches by taxi or scooter. If you want peace over convenience, choose the north or the south.

Which side of Phu Quoc has the best beaches?

It depends on the style. Long Beach on the west is long and social, with sunsets. Sao Beach in the south has white sand and calm water for swimming and boats. Ganh Dau in the north is secluded, with forest behind the sand.

Is Long Beach or Sao Beach better for a stay?

Long Beach has more restaurants, bars and easy access to Duong Dong. Sao Beach is better for island hopping, since boats and the cable car start near An Thoi, but it is farther from the island's main town and has fewer evening options.

Can you stay in Phu Quoc without renting a scooter?

Yes in Duong Dong, Long Beach and Ong Lang, where taxis and short walks cover most needs. The north and south need taxis, tour coaches or a scooter, so factor transport costs into the base you pick.

When should you book accommodation in Phu Quoc?

For the dry season from about November to March, and for weekends and holidays, book as early as your plans allow. In the wetter months you can often book closer to the date, but check the weather and boat schedules first.
