Bach Ma Temple is a small historic temple at 76 Hang Buom Street in Hanoi’s Old Quarter.

Bach Ma Temple is a small historic temple at 76 Hang Buom Street in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. Dedicated to Long Do and the White Horse, it is one of the four temples associated with the protection of the ancient Thang Long citadel. The legend tells that a white horse guided Emperor Ly Thai To to the place where he built the city walls. Inside, look for the white horse statue, carved wooden details, ceremonial altars and a red-lacquered funeral palanquin. The current buildings largely date from the 18th century.

The White Horse and the founding legend

Bach Ma means “White Horse.” The temple is dedicated to Long Do, a legendary deity associated with Thang Long, the ancient name for Hanoi, and to the white horse in the story of Emperor Ly Thai To.

According to the legend, the horse guided the emperor to the place where he built the city walls. The temple honours that connection, and a statue of the horse inside gives the story a clear focal point. Bach Ma is also one of four temples linked to the protection of the ancient Thang Long citadel, guarding its eastern side.

Pass through the old wooden doors to find a richly decorated interior. Carved wooden structures, ceremonial altars and guardian imagery give the temple its character. Look for the red-lacquered funeral palanquin as well as the white horse statue.

Much of the present structure dates from the 18th century, despite the temple’s much earlier origins. A shrine to Confucius was added in 1839. These layers make the site a place to notice both the legends tied to Hanoi’s beginnings and the later religious additions.

A place of worship in the Old Quarter

Bach Ma stands at 76 Hang Buom Street, among the streets of Hanoi’s Old Quarter. Its religious role remains part of the visit: approach the altars respectfully, and follow the local custom of entering by a side doorway. The central doorway is traditionally reserved for nobility.

On the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month, extended prayers, offerings and ceremonies take place. These dates can offer a closer view of temple practice. The Bach Ma Temple Festival is held on the twelfth day of the second lunar month and includes a procession and traditional music.
