Smith Tower

Smith Tower, at 506 2nd Ave in Seattle’s Pioneer Square, opened in 1914 as the city’s first skyscraper.

Smith Tower, at 506 2nd Ave in Seattle’s Pioneer Square, opened in 1914 as the city’s first skyscraper. Ride its vintage elevator to the 35th-floor observatory for a wraparound view of downtown, Elliott Bay and, on clear days, Mount Rainier. Exhibits on the lower floors add context to the building’s past, while the observatory bar pairs city views with cocktails and light bites. The outdoor deck has railings that can get in the way of photos, so come for the atmosphere and history as well as the panorama.

Seattle’s first skyscraper

Smith Tower

Smith Tower opened in 1914 in Pioneer Square. At 38 stories and 484 feet tall, it was Seattle’s first skyscraper and once held the distinction of being the tallest building west of the Mississippi River. Its white terra-cotta exterior, Neoclassical detailing and pyramid-shaped roof give it a different profile from the newer towers downtown.

The building was commissioned by industrialist Lyman Cornelius Smith, whose businesses included firearms and typewriters. Its long place in the city’s skyline makes the tower a useful stop for understanding how downtown Seattle grew around its older buildings.

Exhibits and the elevator ride

The visit begins with exhibits on the lower floors, where historic objects and displays introduce the tower and Seattle’s past. Some displays invite interaction, including vintage desks and typewriters. Take time to look around before heading to the elevator; there are exhibits on more than one floor.

The ride up is part of the experience. The tower retains vintage elevators with operators, and an original Otis elevator motor is among the items on display. Guided tours are also available, with guides sharing stories about the building and the city. Choose a tour if you want more historical context than the exhibits provide.

The observatory and bar

The observatory sits on the 35th floor. Its outdoor deck curves around the building, giving views across downtown and Pioneer Square, as well as the surrounding water and mountains when conditions are clear. Plaques help identify landmarks in the panorama, including Mount Rainier. The Space Needle can also be seen among the downtown buildings.

Metal railings enclose the deck, so they can cross a camera’s view. Walk around to look for different angles, and expect some shots to include the rails. Inside, the observatory bar has a Prohibition-era style and serves cocktails and light bites. The setting combines the tower’s historic interiors with a high-up view of the city.

For a longer visit, Elevated Afternoon Tea pairs artisanal teas with treats served on a tiered tray. The tower also has a cheese and deli platter. Tickets are recommended in advance, and the lower-floor exhibits are included in the visit experience described here.
