Japanese American Historical Plaza

The Japanese American Historical Plaza is a memorial and public space along the Willamette River in Portland’s Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

The Japanese American Historical Plaza is a memorial and public space along the Willamette River in Portland’s Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Its bronze columns depict Japanese and Japanese American experiences before, during and after World War II, while granite blocks carry haiku about the wartime experience. Take time to read the inscriptions and look out over the water. Cherry trees bring a seasonal draw in early spring, when their blossoms frame the plaza.

The plaza is part of Tom McCall Waterfront Park, on the west bank of the Willamette River in downtown Portland. Its memorials tell stories of Japanese immigrants and Japanese Americans, including the forced removal of Japanese Americans to internment camps during World War II.

At the entrance, bronze figures show Japanese and Japanese American life before, during and after the war. Some depict daily life; others show military service or people being sent to camps. The scenes invite a close look at individual details rather than a hurried walk through the plaza.

Granite blocks around the plaza are carved with haiku about the wartime experience. Read them alongside the memorial figures for a view of how the history is represented in both images and words. The plaza also has exhibits about Asian culture and World War II, described as a learning place for children.

Cherry trees line this section of the waterfront and bloom in early spring. The flowers are a seasonal reason to visit, but the memorial remains worth time outside blossom season: the bronze work, inscriptions and river views can be explored year-round.
