The Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center is the main visitor center at the Homestead entrance to Everglades National Park, at 40001 State Highway 9336. It is a practical place to begin before driving farther into the park. Rangers can help you get your bearings, and maps and park information give you a starting point for choosing trails and stops.

The center is named for Ernest F. Coe, a Connecticut landscape designer who moved to Miami and became an advocate for protecting the Everglades as a national park. He raised funds and support for the effort and worked on ways for people to visit the area while limiting harm to its environment.

Inside, interactive displays introduce the Everglades and its wildlife. Some exhibits are designed for hands-on exploration, so children have things to investigate as well as read. The center also has an introductory film that gives an overview of the park; check inside for a showing during your visit.

Step outside to see the pond beside the building. Wildlife can be spotted around the center, though sightings are not guaranteed. The shop sells souvenirs and has a small selection of snacks and drinks. Restrooms are available, and you can get your national park passport stamped here.

Plan the next stop

Ask a ranger which trails suit your plans and check for current conditions before setting off. Royal Palm is about four miles away and is the starting point for the Anhinga Trail, a short walk through sawgrass marsh on paved paths and boardwalks. The trail is known for opportunities to see birds and other wildlife, but it can draw crowds.

The Main Park Road continues from the Homestead entrance toward Flamingo. There are no restaurants or cafes near the visitor center, and food choices in the shop are limited, so plan meals before you leave the area. The center is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM according to the listed hours.
