Coral Castle

Coral Castle is an outdoor sculpture garden and museum on South Dixie Highway in Homestead, south of Miami. Latvian immigrant Edward Leedskalnin built its coral-rock structures by hand over 28 years, leaving a collection shaped by his engineering skill and a story of lost love. A short introductory film and guided tour explain the site, whose highlights include a working sundial, a banquet table shaped like Florida and carved stone furniture. The grounds are compact, so allow time for another stop nearby.

Edward Leedskalnin, a Latvian immigrant and stonemason, began building Coral Castle in 1923 and continued until 1951. He worked with more than 1,100 tons of coral rock, carving and arranging the stone without modern machinery. The way he moved and shaped the heavy blocks remains part of the site’s enduring mystery.

The collection was first called Rock Gate. Its story is often linked to Leedskalnin’s unrequited love, which he channelled into an imagined world on his property. He also studied astronomy and built a simple home alongside the sculpted courtyard. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

The structures combine practical objects with unusual sculptures. Find the working sundial, carved furniture and a banquet table in the outline of Florida. The massive stone gate is another notable feature. Coral Castle is made from oolitic limestone, commonly referred to here as coral rock.

The grounds are relatively small, but there is plenty to take in during a guided visit. The arrangement of the stones and the precision of the carvings are central to understanding the work. You can walk around the grounds and take photographs; keep to the site’s instructions and do not touch the stone pieces.

How a visit works

An introductory film gives background on Leedskalnin and the construction before the live guided tour. The guide explains the property and its history, then you can explore the grounds. Allow around 60 to 90 minutes for the visit. Because the site is compact, it can fit into a day that includes other stops in the area.

Coral Castle is at 28655 S Dixie Hwy in Homestead, with free parking on site. The grounds have limited shade, so bring an umbrella on hot days. A gift shop is also on the property.
