Stay in St Helier for a first trip without a car, since Liberation Station is the hub for every Liberty Bus route. Choose Gorey for Mont Orgueil and quiet evenings, St Brelade's Bay for a beach base near the airport, St Aubin for a harbor village, and St Ouen's Bay only if you drive.

How to choose a base in Jersey

Jersey is only nine miles by five, and Visit Jersey says you are never more than about ten minutes from the sea, so no base is far from anything on a map. What differs is the bus network, the tide and the character of each corner. The Jersey travel guide covers the island as a whole. Jersey is a Crown Dependency, not part of the UK, so read the entry rules in the UK ETA explainer before you book anything.

Start with the car question, because it decides more than the star rating does. Liberty Bus runs the public network and every route fans out from Liberation Station in St Helier. If you are not hiring a car, the sensible bases are the ones with several routes: St Helier, St Brelade's Bay, St Aubin and Gorey. If you are driving, the west and north open up, and the choice becomes about scenery and parking instead of timetables.

Next, think about the tide. Visit Jersey notes that the island has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world, the third largest, and that at low tide the island nearly doubles in size. A beach hotel can look out on a wide sand flat at one hour and a lapping shoreline six hours later. That is part of the appeal, but it also means beach plans follow the tide table, not the clock. The tide times are published on gov.je, and it is worth reading them on the day you arrive.

Last, match the base to the length of the stay. For two or three nights, one base is plenty. For five or more, a split works well: a few nights in St Helier or Gorey for sights, then a few on the west or south coast for beaches and walking. Because buses all lead back to St Helier, switching bases is simple by bus or taxi.

The price bands are rough guides for a double room per night: $ for a simple guesthouse, $$ for a mid-range hotel or self-catering unit, $$$ for a beach hotel or a spa property. Rates move with the season and the ferry and flight calendar, so no figures are quoted here. Read the final total, with breakfast and any extras, before you pay.

St Helier is the capital, the ferry arrival point and the center of the bus network. Liberty Bus describes Liberation Station as the central hub for all routes, and a TownLink service runs around the town center from Monday to Saturday, according to Visit Jersey. From Jersey Airport, the airport says bus 22 is an express service to St Helier that takes about 20 minutes, with buses 9 and 15 as alternatives. That makes the first and last day of a trip easy, which matters when a ferry or flight time is fixed.

The town also holds the main indoor and wet-weather options. Visit Jersey lists the Central Market and the Fish Market among its shopping highlights, and Jersey Heritage runs the Jersey Museum, Art Gallery and Victorian House in town. Elizabeth Castle, the fortress on a tidal islet in the bay, is reached on foot across the causeway at low tide or on the Castle Ferry, whose kiosk Jersey Heritage places at the Westpark slip across from the Grand Hotel. Restaurants and bars are concentrated here, so an evening out does not depend on a taxi.

The trade-off is that St Helier is a working town. It is busier and louder than the coast, and the beach along the bay is a town beach with a road behind it. If you plan to drive, note that gov.je lists paid public car parks in the town, paid by paycard or PayByPhone, and that some multi-storey car parks have a height limit of 1.98 meters (6 ft 6 in). Many hotels either have their own spaces or work without a car, so ask when you book.

Evite se you want to wake up next to a beach. St Brelade's Bay and St Ouen's Bay are better matches.

If you want St Helier’s markets and restaurants on foot, this one is close

2. St Brelade's Bay

Best for
Beach stays, families

St Brelade's Bay sits on the south-west coast, close to the airport, and ferry operators describe it as one of the island's most popular beaches. Visit Jersey names St Brelade among the parishes known for its sunny beaches, which is why the bay carries most of the island's beach hotels. According to the airport, bus 12 links the airport with St Aubin and St Brelade's Bay, and Visit Jersey lists buses 12, 12A and 14 as the routes to the bay. La Corbière lighthouse, one of the island's best-known sights, is reached by buses 12A and 22.

This is the base for a beach-first stay. A short walk from the room puts you on the sand in the morning, and the bay suits families who want a swim break between sights. The bay is also close to the airport, which helps with an early flight home. Because the beach changes so much with the tide, check the times before you plan a picnic or a paddle.

The limits are price and distance from the east. The beach hotels sit at the upper end of the price range, and Gorey, Mont Orgueil Castle and La Hougue Bie are on the other side of the island. You can still reach them by bus through St Helier, but a day built around the east means a longer journey each way. If castles and museums are the point of the trip, choose a different base.

Evite se you plan to sightsee in the east every day. Gorey or St Helier cut the travel time.

Choose St Brelade's Bay for sand close by, if you skip daily trips to the east

3. St Aubin

Best for
Couples, walkers
Airport
Bus 15, about 30 minutes
Local buses
12, 12A, 14, 15

$$

St Aubin is a harbor village on the bay of the same name, between St Helier and St Brelade. The airport lists bus 15 as running via Red Houses to St Aubin in about 30 minutes on a double decker with luggage racks, and Visit Jersey lists buses 12, 12A, 14 and 15 for the village. That is a good set of routes for a village base, and it means St Helier is a short ride away for dinner or the ferry to Elizabeth Castle.

The village suits slower travel. Visit Jersey notes that the St Aubin's Bay section of the Jersey Tidal Trail is one of the stretches that works well for cycling, and the trail itself is free to walk and runs for more than 48 miles around the coast. Staying here lets you walk or ride along the bay in the morning and reach other sections by bus. It is a calmer, more romantic alternative to the town.

The trade-off is that St Aubin has fewer shops, restaurants and sights than St Helier, so evenings are quieter. It is also not the quickest base for the east: Mont Orgueil and La Hougue Bie need a bus change in town. Choose it if your days are about the bay and the coastal path, and your evenings are about a village dinner.

Evite se you want castles and museums close by. St Helier or Gorey is better placed.

4. Gorey

Best for
History, quiet evenings
Local buses

Mont Orgueil Castle
Price band
$$

Gorey is the harbor village on the east coast below Mont Orgueil Castle, which Jersey Heritage describes as a medieval castle with links to the English Crown and views across to France. Visit Jersey lists buses 1, 1A and 2 for Gorey Village and the castle, and bus 1A also serves Samares Manor. Jersey Heritage adds that La Hougue Bie, the ancient site and museum in Grouville, is served by buses 13 and 21.

The castle is the main reason to stay. Jersey Heritage lists 2026 opening as daily from 1 March to 24 October, 10am to 5.30pm, then daily from 25 October to 31 December, 10am to 4pm, with last entry an hour before closing. Because the castle is a short walk from the harbor, you can visit early or late in the day, when the day-trip buses are quieter. The village has a waterfront with restaurants, and the evenings are calmer than in town.

If you drive, parking needs a plan. Jersey Heritage says there is disc and paycard parking at Gorey Harbour and on Gorey Coast Road, and a free public car park at Long Beach, with pedestrian access to the castle from the harbor pier and the main entrance on Castle Green. The weak point is the west: reaching Corbière or St Ouen's Bay from Gorey means a journey through town, so give those days a car or a taxi.

Evite se you want surf beaches and western sunsets. The west coast bases are better matches.

A good pick for Gorey Castle on foot, with a car or taxi for the west.

5. St Ouen's Bay

St Ouen's Bay is the long west-facing beach on the Atlantic side of the island, and Visit Jersey runs a live webcam of it on its general information page. The shore is wide and exposed, which suits surfers and walkers and is the opposite of a sheltered cove. La Corbière lighthouse, which Visit Jersey places at the island's south-western corner, reached by a causeway, sits at the southern end of the bay, and it is free to visit.

Jersey War Tunnels, Jersey: White baseball jerseys with numbers displayed on wall

Accommodation here leans toward self-catering and character stays. Visit Jersey lists Barge Aground, a Jersey Heritage let in the bay with direct beach access, which it describes as the last of the seaside follies and chalets that once lined the bay, built in the 1930s. Jersey Heritage lets are one of the island's more unusual options, and Jersey Heritage's own pages carry offers for midweek stays in the cooler months, so check the terms and dates.

The limit is transport. Most of the island's bus routes run through St Helier, and only a few reach the west, such as buses 12A and 22 to Corbière. If you do not drive, check the Liberty Bus timetables before you commit, and consider an e-bike, which Visit Jersey recommends for less serious cyclists who want to take on the hills. Stormy days can also make the bay wild, which is part of the pleasure for some travelers and a reason to move for others.

Evite se you rely on buses and late dinners. A town or village base is easier.

Quick picks by traveler type

First-timers without a car: St Helier. Couples who want a village and a coastal path: St Aubin. Families who want sand: St Brelade's Bay. History lovers who want an early start at the castle: Gorey. Surfers and drivers: St Ouen's Bay. Travelers on a budget: a mid-range hotel or self-catering unit in St Helier, where the bus hub cuts the cost of taxis, or a guesthouse in Gorey.

Self-catering deserves a mention. Visit Jersey's accommodation pages list hotels, self-catering, glamping pods and unusual stays, from clifftop castles to countryside hideaways. A self-catering unit suits stays of five nights or more, especially for families, since you can cook with local produce from the markets. Weigh that against the lack of daily breakfast, and check the distance to the nearest bus stop.

Choosing by season

Summer decides the base in favor of the coast. Visit Jersey says July and August are the warmest months, with long days and temperatures often averaging into the high 20s, so a beach base pays off then. St Brelade's Bay and St Ouen's Bay are at their best in those weeks, and they are also the busiest, so book early.

Outside summer, town and village bases make more sense. Spring and autumn are good for walking the Tidal Trail, and the evenings in St Helier and Gorey stay lively when the beaches are quiet. Winter is the quietest period, and hours shorten: Jersey Heritage's Mont Orgueil Castle moves to 10am to 4pm from 25 October, and Elizabeth Castle's season in 2026 runs to 1 November. A hotel near restaurants and the bus hub is a better winter choice than a remote beach lodge.

Choosing by length of stay

Two nights belong in St Helier or Gorey, with a day for Mont Orgueil and a half day for the capital. Three nights fit the plan in Jersey in 3 days, which works from either base. Four to six nights are better split: three in St Helier or Gorey, then two or three on the west or south coast. A week lets you add the Tidal Trail, Jersey Zoo and a day trip to another island by ferry.

If you are arriving by boat, the ferry port is in St Helier, which is another reason to start the stay there. The ferry or flight to Jersey guide compares the routes and explains how ID and the ETA fit in, and the St-Malo guide is useful if you are crossing from France.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is booking a west coast base without a car, then discovering that the bus to the evening restaurant does not run late. The second is picking a beach hotel for a castle-and-museum trip and spending the day on buses. The third is ignoring the tide: at low tide the shoreline can be a long walk from the hotel, and the sea can move quickly on the way back.

Channel Islands Military Museum, Jersey: brown building
Channel Islands Military Museum, Jersey

The fourth is overlooking the season. Some attractions shorten their hours in late October, and some beach cafes slow down outside summer. The fifth is forgetting entry rules: Jersey follows the UK's entry system, so check whether you need an ETA, which is described in the UK ETA explainer, before you pay a deposit.

Booking tips for Jersey

Beach hotels fill first for July and August, and the busiest ferry and flight days tend to follow school holidays, so reserve those weeks early. Visit Jersey's offers page lists hotel deals with set dates, such as direct-booking discounts that require a minimum notice period. Read the conditions, compare with a booking site on the same dates, and check whether breakfast, parking and cancellation are in the rate.

If you plan to use the bus, ask the hotel which route is closest, and use the Liberty Bus hotel map to confirm it. Liberty Bus sells a Discover Jersey pass for 1, 2, 3 or 7 consecutive days, which starts from your first journey, so buy it on the day you begin using buses. Set up your phone before you travel, since Visit Jersey warns that most UK mobile networks do not extend to the island and calls are usually treated as international: the eSIM and connectivity guide compares options.

Island trips depend on weather, so read the travel insurance guide for cancellation cover, and look at getting around if you are linking Jersey to a longer route through the UK.

Perguntas frequentes

Where is the best place to stay in Jersey for a first visit?

St Helier, the capital, if you are not hiring a car. Liberation Station is the hub for every Liberty Bus route, and the town has the markets, restaurants and the Elizabeth Castle ferry. Gorey and St Brelade's Bay suit travelers who want a quieter coast base.

Do you need a car if you stay in Jersey?

Not in St Helier, Gorey, St Aubin or St Brelade's Bay, which all have Liberty Bus routes. A car or e-bike helps in St Ouen's Bay and the north, where services are thinner. Check the Liberty Bus hotel map before you book.

Is St Helier or St Brelade better for a beach holiday?

St Brelade's Bay, which Visit Jersey and ferry operators single out as one of the island's most popular beaches. St Helier is better for transport and evenings, with a beach town feel only along St Aubin's Bay.

Where should you stay in Jersey to visit Mont Orgueil Castle?

Gorey. The castle sits above the harbor, and buses 1, 1A and 2 serve the village. Parking at Gorey Harbour uses discs and paycards, with a free public car park at Long Beach, so check the Jersey Heritage page if you drive.

Is it cheaper to book direct or through a site in Jersey?

Some Jersey hotels advertise direct-booking discounts on Visit Jersey's offers page, with set dates and notice periods. Compare the direct rate with a booking site on the same dates, and check what breakfast and cancellation terms each includes.
