Em resumo

Choose Ko Phi Phi for dramatic scenery and a short stay, Ko Lanta for a slow, quieter week, and Railay for cliff-backed beaches and climbing. Phi Phi and Railay work as short stays, Lanta needs more days and closes in part of the rainy season. Check ferry times and season for your dates.

Which base should you pick?

For a short first trip, Ko Phi Phi gives the strongest scenery, while Ko Lanta is the better place for a slow, quieter week and Railay is the best for cliff-backed beaches and climbing. The Ko Phi Phi travel guide covers the busiest of the three, the Ko Lanta travel guide covers the slowest, and the Railay guide covers the peninsula between them. For the wider trip, see the Thailand guide.

All three sit within a few hours of Krabi, so the choice is less about distance than about mood. Phi Phi is compact, car-free and crowded by day. Lanta is long, spread out and calm, with a single main road. Railay is a small peninsula reached only by boat, with climbing and viewpoints. If you cannot decide, pick by the evening you want.

If you want a cliff and a quiet dinner, go to Railay. If you want a beach bar and a short stay, go to Phi Phi. If you want to read a book on a long, empty beach for a week, go to Lanta.

How do they compare side by side?

The table compares the three on the points that most often decide a base. Cells are short on purpose, and the sections below explain the trade-offs.

Choose Ko Phi Phi if...

Choose Ko Phi Phi if you want the Andaman scenery in a short stay. The limestone cliffs, the viewpoint and the boats to Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon are the draw, and Tonsai Village has restaurants, dive desks and bars within a few minutes on foot. You can reach it from Phuket or Krabi by ferry in roughly two hours, which makes it easy to fit into a route.

It is also the best choice for snorkelers who want a short boat ride to clear water. The compromise is crowds. Day boats arrive in late morning and leave by mid-afternoon, so beaches are busy at midday and calmer at dawn and dusk. A night on the island, rather than a day trip, changes the experience a lot. Our guide to where to stay on Ko Phi Phi compares four bases, and Ko Phi Phi day trip or overnight explains the ferry and Maya Bay rules.

Choose Ko Lanta if...

Choose Ko Lanta if you want space and quiet. The island is long, with beaches along the west coast, an old town on the east side and a national park at the southern tip. Klong Dao is busiest, Long Beach has restaurants and bars, and Klong Nin and Kantiang Bay are quieter. Life runs on one main road, and songthaews and scooters connect the beaches.

Lanta suits longer stays and families, and it is usually cheaper than Phi Phi or Railay. The trade-off is seasonality. Many resorts and restaurants close in the rainy season, roughly May to October, and ferries and boat trips are fewer. Distances between beaches are several kilometers, so choose your beach before you book. The island is also a base for snorkel and dive trips, including Ko Rok and Ko Haa, with dive sites such as Hin Daeng and Hin Muang for certified divers.

If you want a quieter Andaman coast without crowds, Lanta is the easiest. Check the Ko Lanta guide for the beaches and the season.

Choose Railay if...

Choose Railay if scenery and climbing matter more than nightlife. The peninsula is backed by tall limestone cliffs and has several beaches, with viewpoints, caves and a climbing scene that draws visitors from around the world. There are no cars, and boats arrive from Ao Nang and Krabi Town, so the peninsula feels like an island.

It suits couples, climbers and anyone who wants dramatic scenery within an hour of Krabi. The cost is price and logistics: stays are pricier than in Ao Nang, bags need to be light, and boats stop in the evening or run less often in rough weather. Tides also affect which beaches are pleasant for swimming, so ask your hotel about conditions.

It is also easy to combine with Phi Phi or Ao Nang. See the Railay guide and Ao Nang for transfers and where to stay.

Can you combine them in one trip?

Yes, and many travelers do. A week works well as a chain: two nights at Railay for scenery, two nights on Phi Phi for the viewpoint and Maya Bay, then three nights on Lanta for a slow finish. In the high season, from about November to April, ferries link the three, so you do not need to go back through Krabi each time.

In the rainy season, ferry schedules thin out and some routes stop, so check each leg and keep a spare day before any flight. If you only have a few nights, keep one base and day-trip to the others. Our guide to getting around Thailand covers ferry and transfer options, and the Krabi Province page covers the mainland base.

Moving between islands costs a morning, so limit the number of moves. If you plan three bases, choose the order to end near the airport you fly from. Pack in a soft bag, because piers and trails are sandy.

Compare options in our guides to travel insurance and connectivity and eSIMs, and read the Thailand entry rules before you fly.

Which traveler suits which base?

Short-stay travelers who want scenery and a lively evening should pick Ko Phi Phi. Couples and climbers who prefer cliffs and quiet should pick Railay. Families, long-stay visitors and anyone on a tighter budget should lean toward Ko Lanta, where beaches are long, accommodation is cheaper and the pace is slower.

If you are traveling in the rainy season, choose Railay or Phi Phi over Lanta, because more places stay open, and keep your dates flexible. If you are traveling in the high season, book early for all three, especially around Christmas and New Year. Ask about noise, the pier distance and the cancellation terms before you pay, and compare a few options on the booking page before you commit.

How do season and ferries change the choice?

The Andaman coast has a dry season from roughly November to April and a rainy season from about May to October. All three bases are best in the dry months, but they cope with the rains differently. Railay stays reachable from Ao Nang in most conditions, because the crossing is short, though boats can stop in rough weather. Phi Phi has fewer sailings and more cancellations, and some bars, restaurants and resorts close. Lanta feels the season most, with many resorts shut and boat links thinned out.

That means your dates should drive your base. For a trip between June and October, choose Railay or a mainland base near Ao Nang and treat Phi Phi as an optional day if the sea allows. For November to April, any of the three works, and the main question is the mood you want. Always keep a spare day before an international flight, because ferry delays are the most common reason for a missed connection.

Check each leg before you book. Operators publish timetables by season, and the departure pier can change. Phi Phi ferries from Krabi mostly leave from a pier outside Krabi Town, Railay boats leave from Ao Nang and Krabi Town, and Lanta is reached by minivan with two short car-ferry crossings or by boat in the high season. Our Krabi Province page and the Krabi Town guide cover the mainland base for all three.

Which is best on a budget?

Value depends on the season and on how you travel. Ko Lanta and Krabi Town usually give the lowest nightly rates for a week or longer, because accommodation is spread out and competition is strong. Phi Phi is pricier per night for what you get, partly because everything arrives by boat and beds are limited, and Railay and Laem Tong on Phi Phi sit at the top of the range.

You can save on each island with a few habits. Eat where locals eat rather than on the beachfront, travel by shared songthaew or public ferry instead of private boats, and book a room without a sea view. In the shoulder and rainy months, rates fall, but weigh that against the risk of rough seas, closures and cancelled boats. If your budget is tight, base yourself in Krabi Town or Ao Nang and visit the three places as day trips by boat, which avoids paying for an island room you only use to sleep.

Whatever you choose, add the cost of transfers. A cheap room that needs a private longtail each way can end up costing more than a pricier room beside the pier, so compare the full cost, not just the nightly rate, on the booking page.

Which of the three is best for families?

Ko Lanta, because beaches are long and quiet and the pace is relaxed. Phi Phi works for a short stay if you stay near Loh Dalum Bay, and Railay is fine for older children, but heavy bags and boat transfers are tiring.
