Em resumo

Ride the First gondola for the Cliff Walk, the Bachalpsee path and the optional Flyer or Glider. Add Männlichen or Pfingstegg for easy walks, and keep the sports center and local museum for rain. Overnight guests get a Guest Card with lift discounts and free local buses. Save the Jungfraujoch for the clearest morning.

Things to do in Grindelwald at a glance

Grindelwald is a long valley village under the Eiger, and most of what you do here involves going up. The Grindelwald travel guide explains the setting. The village lies in the Bernese Oberland, a few stops by rail from Interlaken, so it fits easily into a loop that also includes the Switzerland guide highlights such as Lucerne or Zermatt.

Think of the options in three groups. The first is First, the gondola, viewpoint and adventure area above the village, which suits most visitors and most weather. The second is the other lifts and buses, which lead to easier walks or family stops. The third is the weather plan: what to do when cloud sits on the peaks or rain falls in the valley. A good Grindelwald stay mixes all three and keeps one day free.

Prices below are the operator's listed starting prices on the day of checking. They depend on departure point, date and discount, so use the operator's price calculator for your own trip and treat the figures here as a guide to scale.

First: gondola, Cliff Walk and Bachalpsee

The First gondola is the best all-weather start. Grindelwald Tourismus gives the ride from the village to the First mountain station as about 25 minutes, passing Bort and Schreckfeld, and the Jungfrau Railways list the station at 2,166 meters. A ticket for the cable car is listed from CHF 38. At the top, three things draw most visitors.

The First Cliff Walk is a 45 meter footbridge along the rock wall with views of the snow-covered peaks, and the operator gives about 20 minutes for the visit. The First View platform, at 2,194 meters, gives seven angles on the Oberland ring in around 20 minutes. Lake Bachalpsee is the walk: a well-maintained trail leads from the mountain station to the lake in less than an hour, and the operator lists about two hours for the return trip, at 2,265 meters. Allow longer if you stop for photos, and carry water and a jacket, since the weather at 2,200 meters differs from the valley.

For adventure, the First Flyer is a zipline on an 800 meter cable that the operator says reaches 84 km/h, and the First Glider is a two-way flight where up to four people fly in a harness. The First Mountain Cart rolls from Schreckfeld to Bort in about 30 minutes, and the Trottibike scooter descends from Bort to Grindelwald in about 30 minutes, dropping from 1,600 to 1,034 meters. The Adventure Package, from CHF 60, includes up to two of these activities and unlimited gondola rides, and the operator lists it from 13 April to 25 October 2026.

If you are fit and the day is clear, make First a half-day hike instead: ride up, walk to Bachalpsee, and return by gondola. If you prefer a downhill finish, take the Mountain Cart and Trottibike, which join in a single descent back to the village.

Other lifts and walks

Männlichen is the second big gondola. Grindelwald Tourismus says it takes 19 minutes from Grindelwald Terminal to 2,225 meters, into what it calls a hiking and ski paradise. It suits visitors who want broad panoramic walking without the adventure add-ons of First, and it starts several trails, so ask the lift staff which sections are open. Check the operator's timetable for the seasonal dates, and note that some walks require a return by rail or bus.

Pfingstegg is the family option. The cable car takes about 5 minutes from the valley to a plateau of roughly 1,400 meters and operates in summer only, according to Grindelwald Tourismus. On top you will find a toboggan run, a Fly Line and an adventure playground. The Jungfrau Travel Pass does not include Pfingstegg, so check the pass terms before you rely on it.

GrindelwaldBus connects the village with mountain trailheads. Grindelwald Tourismus lists routes to Bussalp, Waldspitz and over Grosse Scheidegg, and says holders of the Jungfrau Travel Pass with the Guest Card can use the mountain routes free of charge. A three-day GrindelwaldBus pass is also sold. Use the bus to start a walk at altitude and finish downhill in the village.

For a long day, the high-altitude hike from Schynige Platte to First follows the Faulhorn and takes about six hours, according to the Jungfrau Railways. It requires a good fitness level, weather that is stable and an early start, and you should check the cogwheel railway's operating dates first.

The Jungfraujoch and the Eiger Express

Many visitors come for the Jungfraujoch, and Grindelwald is the village where the Eiger Express begins. The tricable gondola leaves from Grindelwald Terminal and reaches the Eiger Glacier station at 2,320 meters in 15 minutes, where the Jungfrau Railway continues to Europe's highest railway station at 3,454 meters. The operator lists the whole journey from Grindelwald Terminal as 45 minutes. The trip depends on a clear view, so keep a flexible day and decide on the morning. Everything about tickets, seat reservations and timing is in Jungfraujoch from Grindelwald.

Winter in Grindelwald

Winter changes the village. The First and Männlichen areas turn into ski and winter-hiking terrain, and the Jungfrau Railways sell a Winter Pass listed from CHF 399 for 1 December 2026 to 30 April 2027. The operator also notes that the Flyer and Glider run in winter, so the adventure side does not close entirely.

One winter sight is specific to Grindelwald. The Martinsloch is a rock window on the Eiger, and Grindelwald Tourismus says the sun shines through it at midday. From near the church the light is visible on 27 and 28 November and from 13 to 16 January, and in good weather you can see the phenomenon around midday every day from 24 November to 22 January. It begins at about 12:30 CET and lasts from three to thirty minutes depending on where you stand. It is a free sight, which makes it a nice addition to a winter day.

How to order the days

With two days, give the first to First and Bachalpsee, because the gondola, the Cliff Walk and the lake walk fit a single day with time to spare. Use the second for the Jungfraujoch if the morning is clear, or for Männlichen and a valley walk if it is not. The order matters less than the rule that you decide each morning from the webcams, not weeks ahead.

With three days, add a slower day: Pfingstegg with children in summer, a GrindelwaldBus ride to Bussalp or Waldspitz for a downhill walk, or an afternoon in the sports center. This is also the day when the Guest Card earns its keep, because local buses are free and several lifts are discounted. In winter, swap that day for skiing or winter walking and the Martinsloch at midday.

Keep one hour at each end of the day free. Gondolas can queue at midday in good weather, so ride up early and return before the late-afternoon rush if you want a calm descent. If you plan a long hike such as Schynige Platte to First, check the last gondola and bus times before you start, and carry food and water, since mountain restaurants close on their own schedules.

What to do when it rains

Grindelwald copes with bad weather better than its mountain image suggests. Grindelwald Tourismus lists a sports center with an indoor pool, sauna, bouldering room, gym and ice rink, plus winter extras such as a curling rink. The Grindelwald local history museum covers farming, mountaineering, winter sports and railways and is open from late December to the end of March and from early June to mid-October, around one kilometer from the station.

In low cloud, skip the high lifts. The First gondola and Männlichen run in many conditions, but the views are the point, so check the webcams the operators publish before you pay. A short valley walk, a restaurant lunch and the museum make a sensible day, and the Jungfraujoch can wait for tomorrow.

Passes, cards and discounts

Several cards apply in Grindelwald, and they overlap. Grindelwald Tourismus describes the Guest Card, issued for overnight stays, as giving discounts on the Pfingstegg, Männlichen and First lifts and free use of local buses. The Swiss Half Fare Card halves fares on mountain railways and cable cars in Grindelwald, is valid for 30 days and is available only to people who live outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The Swiss Travel Pass gives discounts on mountain railways, and the Berner Oberland Pass bundles over 25 mountain railways and cable cars with the lake boats.

Whether a pass pays depends on how many lifts you ride. Price your plan first, using the operator's calculator, which lists the Half Fare Card, Swiss Travel Pass, Jungfrau Travel Pass and Bernese Oberland Pass as discount options. The Swiss Travel Pass analysis explains the national pass, and Grindelwald or Interlaken helps you decide where the card and the bed should be.

Mistakes to avoid

The first mistake is paying for a summit on a cloudy day. Check the webcam on the morning and decide then. The second is stacking too many lifts in a day: First plus Männlichen is a lot of vertical, and the best moments need time, not volume. The third is ignoring the Guest Card, which cuts lift costs and bus fares. The fourth is hiking in light shoes, since mountain paths at 2,000 meters are rocky and the weather changes quickly. The last is skipping insurance; see insurance for hiking above 3,000 meters if you plan the Jungfraujoch or high trails.

Before you travel, set up an eSIM for Switzerland so you can check webcams, lift status and timetables on the move, and review getting around Europe by train to plan the rail leg from Interlaken.
