Stay in Ciutadella if you want an old town in the evening and the best south-west coves a short drive away, and in Maó if value, the harbor and the airport matter most. Choose Cala Galdana for a beach resort next to the coves, and Fornells for a quiet north-coast stay. Whatever you pick, book a rental car and the room together, as both sell out in summer.

How to choose a base in Menorca

Menorca is a small island, about 50 km from end to end, but the roads are narrow and the best coves are down side lanes, so the base you pick changes your days. The choice comes down to three things: whether you want a town in the evening or a quiet resort, how many coves you plan to visit, and whether you will rent a car. The Menorca travel guide covers what the island offers, and this page settles where to sleep. For the wider trip, start with the Spain guide.

Most visitors arrive at Menorca airport near Maó, or by ferry at Maó or Ciutadella. If you land late, a base near the airport or the port makes sense for the first night. If you have a car, you can sleep anywhere and drive; if you do not, Maó and Ciutadella are the only bases with enough shops, buses and restaurants to work without one. Read how to get to Menorca for flights, ferries and car hire.

Prices in this guide are relative bands: $ is a simple guesthouse, $$ a mid-range hotel or apartment, $$$ a beach resort. Actual rates swing with the calendar, and July and August cost the most. Many hotels, beach bars and restaurants close from about November to March, so check that your base is open. The island also adds a Balearic sustainable tourism tax per person per night at your accommodation, and the amount depends on the accommodation type and season, so ask what it adds to the total and use the official calculator at illessostenibles.travel; see also tourist taxes in Europe.

1. Ciutadella

Ciutadella is the old capital in the west, a town of narrow lanes, palaces and a small harbor lined with restaurants. It is the strongest base for a first trip, because it combines an atmospheric evening with short drives to the best south-west coves, including Macarella and Turqueta. You can walk from your hotel to the harbor for dinner, and use the morning to reach a cove before the car parks fill.

The trade-offs are parking and crowds. The old center is tight for cars, many hotels have little or no parking, and the harbor is busy on summer evenings. The Sant Joan festival, centered on 23 and 24 June, brings horses, crowds and full hotels, so book far ahead if your dates overlap and check the town hall's programme. Outside the peak, the lanes are quiet and the harbor is pleasant.

Property types are boutique hotels in old townhouses, apartments and a few larger hotels on the edge of town. Rooms in old buildings can be small. If you want to be on a beach at night, pick the south coast. If you want restaurants on foot and cove access by car, Ciutadella is the sweet spot. See the Ciutadella travel guide for the town itself.

Evite se you want a hotel on the sand or free parking at your door. Cala Galdana or a south-coast resort suits you better.

If you want restaurants on foot and coves by car, this central stay fits.

Maó, also written Mahón, is the island capital in the east, set above one of the longest natural harbors in the Mediterranean. It has a lively waterfront, a market square, shops and a long history from the British period. It is the practical base for short stays, early flights and travelers who want choice and lower prices.

Platges de Son Saura, Menorca

The airport and the main ferry port are close, so arrivals and departures are simple. It is also a good base for the east coast, where Es Grau and the Albufera natural park lie, and for Binibeca and the white fishing village nearby. The compromise is distance from the best south-west coves, which are about 30 to 45 minutes by road. If you plan to swim every day, you will be driving.

Property types are mainly hotels, apartments and guesthouses in and around the old center. The harbor has boat trips and restaurants, and the town works well in the shoulder season when resorts are quiet. If you arrive late or leave early, a night here at either end of a trip is a smart choice even if you stay elsewhere in between.

Evite se your plan is to spend every day in the south-west coves. Ciutadella or Cala Galdana puts you closer.

A smart pick for the first or last night, with Maó’s centre close.

3. Cala Galdana and the south coast

Best for
Beach holidays, families

About 40 min by road
To the coves
5–15 min by car or on foot

Cala Galdana is a horseshoe bay on the south coast with a sandy beach, beachfront hotels and paths to nearby coves. It is the base for travelers who want a beach holiday with minimal driving, and it is close to Macarella, Turqueta and Mitjana, though the quietest coves still need a morning start. Walking sections of the coast path from the bay is a good way to reach small coves without a car.

Hotels here are mostly resort-style, with pools, buffets and half-board options, and apartments back from the beach. Prices run high in summer, and the bay can be crowded at midday. Evenings are quiet, with a handful of restaurants around the beach, and sights such as Ciutadella and Maó require a car or a bus.

Other south-coast resorts, such as Son Bou and Santo Tomás, suit longer beaches and package-style stays, with a different feel: more families, bigger hotels and long stretches of sand. If you choose any south-coast resort, check whether the hotel offers a shuttle, and whether the price includes parking. Book early, because the best rooms go months ahead.

Evite se you want old-town evenings or to be near the airport. Ciutadella or Maó suits you better.

4. Fornells and the north coast

Best for
Quiet, walkers, wind sports
Airport
About 30 min by road
To the coves
Rocky north coast by car
Price band

Fornells is a fishing village on a wide bay in the north, known for seafood and a strong breeze that suits sailing and wind sports. The north coast is rockier and wilder than the south, with red-sand coves such as Pregonda reached on foot from car parks, and lighthouses on headlands. It suits walkers, couples and travelers who want calm over beaches.

Stays are small hotels, guesthouses and rented villas, and the village has a handful of seafood restaurants. Evenings are slow, which is the point. The wind can be strong, and some north-coast beaches have rougher water, so check flags and conditions before swimming. For sheltered sand, you drive to the south.

This is the base where a car matters most. Buses reach Fornells, but not the coves and trailheads, and taxis cost a lot over island distances. If you rent a car and like quiet, it is a rewarding base, especially in May, June and September when the island is calmer.

Evite se you want a sheltered sandy beach at your door or a lively evening scene. The south coast or Ciutadella suits you better.

Choosing by trip type

Let the main plan pick the base. A first trip that mixes evenings in an old town with a few coves points to Ciutadella. A short trip with an early flight or a late ferry points to Maó. A beach holiday with sand on the doorstep and as little driving as possible points to Cala Galdana or another south-coast resort. A quiet week of walking and seafood points to Fornells. If you are traveling in a group with different tastes, Ciutadella is the compromise, since it has evenings for some and early access to the coves for others.

Trip length matters too. With three days, one base is enough, and Ciutadella is the best single choice. With five, consider two nights in town and three on the south coast. With a week or more, split between the two coasts and let the car do the moving. How many days in Menorca turns each length into a day-by-day plan.

Coves, parking and your base

The base changes how early you can reach a cove, and the island council's own page for Cala en Turqueta shows why. It describes the free car park as limited, about a 15-minute walk from the beach, with a barrier that closes the car park to vehicles once it is full, and panels at the roundabout that show when. A public bus runs from Ciutadella to the beach as an alternative.

Cala Mitjana, Menorca: a view of a body of water surrounded by trees
Cala Mitjana, Menorca

That favors a base near the south-west. From Ciutadella or Cala Galdana you can be at the car park before it fills. From Maó the same cove is a drive of roughly 30 to 45 minutes, so you either leave very early or take a different cove that day. Macarella and Macarelleta have their own parking arrangements, so check the council's pages for the cove you want before you set an alarm.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is booking Maó for a week of south-coast swimming and then driving every day. It is a good base for the airport, the harbor and value, not for cove mornings. The second is booking a south-coast resort for a week and expecting evenings in a town. Cala Galdana and its neighbors are quiet after dark, and Ciutadella and Maó are a drive away.

The third is arriving at Ciutadella in the Sant Joan days without a room. The festival fills the old town with crowds and horses, and rooms sell out. The fourth is booking a winter or shoulder-season stay without confirming that the hotel, the restaurants and the beach bars are open, since many close between about November and March. The last is renting a car late. Summer supply is limited, so book the car when you book the room.

Booking tips and timing

Book the room and the rental car together for July and August, and for the Sant Joan festival in Ciutadella in late June. Rooms in Ciutadella and on the south coast go first. If your dates are flexible, May, June and September offer warm sea and calmer roads, with lower rates. Winter is quiet, and many places close. For the island overview, see the Menorca travel guide, and for the bigger picture of the trip, use how many days in Menorca.

Many travelers split the stay: three nights in Ciutadella or Maó for town evenings, then three on the south or north coast for beach and walking. That cuts daily driving and gives you two kinds of Menorca. If you split, reserve the car for the whole trip, not just the second half, because summer supply is limited.

Before you go, sort the basics. An eSIM for Spain keeps maps and bookings on your phone, travel insurance covers cancellations and medical care, and getting around Europe helps you compare ferries, flights and trains if Menorca is one stop of several.

Perguntas frequentes

What is the best area to stay in Menorca?

Ciutadella for most first trips, because it has an old town, harbor restaurants and the closest base to the south-west coves. Choose Maó for value and the airport, Cala Galdana for a beach resort, and Fornells for quiet.

Is it better to stay in Ciutadella or Maó?

Ciutadella if you want evenings in an old center and short drives to Macarella and Turqueta. Maó if you want a bigger harbor town, cheaper rooms and an easy start or end at the airport. They are about 45 minutes apart by road.

Is Cala Galdana a good place to stay in Menorca?

Yes for a beach holiday, because the bay has a sandy beach, hotels on the front and walking paths to nearby coves. It is quiet in the evening, and you need a car or a bus for sights and restaurants beyond the bay.

Do you need a car if you stay in Menorca?

For most bases, yes. Buses link Maó, Ciutadella and some resorts, but the best coves and trailheads are far easier by car. If you stay in Ciutadella or Maó you can do a few days on foot and by bus.

When should you book accommodation in Menorca?

Early for July and August, and for the Sant Joan festival in Ciutadella in late June. Many hotels and beach bars close in winter, so confirm that your base is open for shoulder-season dates.
