Benagil Cave

Benagil Cave, also called Algar de Benagil, is a sea cave on the Algarve coast, a 15-minute drive from Carvoeiro.

Benagil Cave, also called Algar de Benagil, is a sea cave on the Algarve coast, a 15-minute drive from Carvoeiro. It can only be reached from the water, by boat tour, kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Inside, a domed chamber has a round hole in the ceiling that lets daylight fall onto the water and a small beach, and two arches open to the sea. Most trips start at Benagil Beach. Swimming in is prohibited, so book a tour or a guided kayak outing, and aim for early or late in the day when fewer boats are waiting.

The cave and its two openings

Benagil Cave is a large domed hollow set on a golden beach. Its walls are layers of sedimentary rock that built up over millions of years, and the sea flows in through two mouths. High in the ceiling is a round hole, sometimes called the eye. Sunlight comes through it and lights the water, the sand and the stone.

The Atlantic and the wind have shaped this coast over thousands of years, and the Algarve has many sea caves. Benagil is the best known of them, and the cave is also known as Algar de Benagil.

Getting there by water

The cave can only be entered from the sea, and only when it is calm. Most trips leave from Benagil Beach, about 15 minutes by car from Carvoeiro. Boats also leave from Vale Centeanes beach, within walking distance of the centre of Carvoeiro. Motorboat tours run from Carvoeiro, and boat trips from Portimão pass other caves on the way.

Kayak and stand-up paddleboard trips are also available. A guided kayak outing can cost around €25 per person, and the paddle to the cave takes roughly 10 to 20 minutes.

Boat or kayak

A boat tour gives you the coastline and several other caves in one trip. The drawback is the wait. At busy times boats queue outside the entrance, and the time under the opening can be very short.

A kayak or a small private boat gives you more time and a closer look at the cliffs. One private tour from Armação de Pêra costs $263.88 per group of up to 10 people and lasts an hour. Guides speak English, French, Portuguese and Spanish, and the route covers 10 caves and 12 beaches, including Cova Redonda, Nossa Senhora da Rocha and Marinha.

Rules and sea conditions

Swimming to the cave is prohibited because of the danger. The beach inside is protected and landing there is no longer permitted, so the visit is made from the water.

Sea conditions decide whether tours run. On rough days operators may not sail, so leave a spare day in your plan. Quiet moments are possible. A 7 am kayak group found the cave empty, and in the off-season a visitor stayed more than half an hour with no one else there.

On foot along the cliffs

The cave is also a viewpoint on the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, which follows the clifftop. A guided hiking tour covers about 6 km in around 3 hours. A separate cliff trail starts at Vale Centeanes beach, where the sea has cut caves into the base of the rock and marine fossils can be seen.

There is a free car park, a paid lot and free street parking, and the entrance is wheelchair accessible. The signs from the car park to the viewpoint are not clear, so check the way before you set off. Praia da Marinha is next to the cave and makes an easy second stop.
