Em resumo

Faro airport has no train station, so the choice is a bus, a taxi, a shared or private transfer, or a rental car. Taxis and transfers suit late arrivals and groups, a bus suits a daytime landing with light bags, and a car suits Falésia or a week with day trips. The train stops at Albufeira-Ferreiras, inland from the resort.

The ways to reach Albufeira from Faro airport

Faro is the airport for almost every Algarve trip, and Albufeira sits on the coast to the west of it. The Albufeira travel guide covers the town itself. For the wider trip, the Portugal guide shows how the coast connects to Lisbon and Porto.

The airport has no train station of its own, so the options are a bus, a taxi, a shared or private transfer arranged in advance, or a rental car. A fifth option, the train, works only if you first reach Faro station, and its Albufeira stop is inland from the resort. There is no single best answer. The right one depends on when you land, how many of you there are, how much luggage you carry and where in Albufeira you are staying, which is why the where to stay in Albufeira guide is worth reading first.

Bus: the cheapest option for a daytime landing

Buses run from the airport area to Faro and on to the coast, and the airport's own public transport page lists the current routes and operators. Routes and timetables change by season, so check the page for your date rather than relying on a number you saw last year. The usual pattern is a bus from the airport into Faro, then a second service on to Albufeira, so a direct service saves a change and is worth looking for before you book your flights.

A bus works well for one or two people with a carry-on and a daytime landing. It stops working when you arrive late, because late-night services are limited, so check the last departure for your date, and when you stay far from the bus stop in Albufeira, since the last stretch is a walk with luggage up or down the old-town slopes. Before you commit, check where the bus stops relative to your hotel and whether the final leg is flat. If it is not, the saving over a taxi can disappear in the first steep street.

A bus is also the right choice if you want to see the coast without driving, and it costs the least per person. If your plan includes Benagil and Lagos, though, you will probably want a car or tours for those days, and a rental car for the whole week may be simpler than a bus plus tours.

Taxi and transfer: the simplest option after a long flight

A taxi is the simplest option for a late arrival, a group of three or four or a family with a pram and several bags. You queue outside arrivals, name the hotel and ride to the door. Before you get in, ask whether the fare is metered or fixed, and confirm that the driver will take a card if you have no cash. Ride-hailing apps also work in the Algarve, but airports set their own pickup areas, so check where to stand before you order a car. Ask your hotel to send the exact address and the nearest drop-off point, since many old-town streets are pedestrian or too narrow for a car.

A pre-booked private transfer costs a little more than a taxi in most cases, but the driver tracks your flight, waits if it lands late and holds a name card at arrivals. That is worth paying for with young children or after a night flight, when the last thing you want is to negotiate. A shared transfer is cheaper, but it makes several stops, so a ride that is short on the map can take much longer in practice. Ask how many stops the route has and which hotel is last.

For a family of four with luggage, a taxi or a private transfer can make more sense than four bus tickets once the walk at each end and the wait are counted. Compare the current prices for your date before you decide, because summer demand moves them.

Train: possible, but not the way most people expect

The train is the option that looks easiest on a map and works least well in practice. Faro airport has no station, so you would first take a bus or a taxi to Faro station. From there, regional trains on the Algarve line and Alfa Pendular services both stop at Albufeira-Ferreiras. CP's timetable valid from 19 July 2026 shows regional trains between Faro and Albufeira-Ferreiras in roughly 16 minutes, and CP's listing for Alfa Pendular train AP 186 shows about 24 minutes, so allow 15 to 25 minutes on the rail leg.

The catch is the station name. Albufeira-Ferreiras is inland from the old town and the beaches, so you still need a bus or a taxi down to the coast. For most travelers with luggage, that makes the train a bad fit for the airport run. It makes more sense if you are already in Faro for a night, or if you are traveling west to Lagos or east to Tavira along the coast, where the line is useful. See getting around Europe for how the Algarve line fits with the long-distance trains.

Rental car: the best option for Falésia and day trips

A rental car is the right choice if you stay at Falésia or Olhos de Água, where taxis add up, or if your week includes Benagil, Lagos, Carvoeiro and the west coast. It also removes the problem of a late arrival: you walk to the rental desk, take the keys and go. The Lagos travel guide and the Carvoeiro travel guide show the places a car puts in reach.

Three things catch visitors out. First, the A22 motorway uses electronic tolls with no booths. Portugal's official tolls portal, portugaltolls.com, lists payment options for foreign plates, including a bank card linked to the registration, prepaid cards and short-stay passes, and rental companies usually offer a device or a toll package. Ask at the desk how tolls are charged and whether the device is included in the price. The older N125 road runs near the coast without tolls but is slower and busy in summer.

Second, parking in the old town is limited, and a car you do not need there becomes a daily worry. If you stay in the old town, you may want to collect the car only for the days you plan trips. Third, the rental desk queue in July and August can be long, so book the car in advance, bring your license and a card in the driver's name, and read the fuel and damage policy before you sign.

Which option should you choose?

Match the option to your arrival. If you land in the afternoon with light bags and stay in the old town, take the bus or a taxi and walk the last stretch. If you land late, travel as a family or arrive in a group of four, take a taxi or pre-book a private transfer. If you stay at Falésia or plan day trips, rent the car and plan the toll setup. If you are already in Faro city, the train and a taxi from Albufeira-Ferreiras is a cheap, if slow, way to continue.

Think about the return, too. An early flight home from Faro makes a pre-booked pickup safer than hoping for a taxi at 4am. Confirm the pickup time with your hotel the day before, and leave extra time for the airport in summer, when security queues grow.

If you land from outside Europe, GOV.UK warns that EES registration may take each passenger extra time at the border, so do not book a pickup for the minute you land. The EES explainer walks through the booth.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is booking a shared transfer without checking the number of stops and then arriving at the hotel an hour late. The second is assuming the train station is in Albufeira town: it is not, and the last leg costs time and money. The third is landing late and relying on a bus that stopped running. The fourth is collecting a rental car without asking how tolls work and finding out at the end of the week. The last is arranging a transfer to the wrong end of Albufeira: the old town, Oura and Falésia are far enough apart that an address matters.

Before you go

A local data plan helps on this transfer more than most: with an eSIM for Portugal active before you land, you can check bus times, order a ride or message a transfer driver from the baggage hall. Travel insurance is worth having if a missed connection would strand a prepaid transfer. When the transfer is sorted, return to where to stay in Albufeira to choose the base, or read Faro if you plan a night in the city first.

Perguntas frequentes

How do you get from Faro airport to Albufeira?

By bus, taxi, shared or private transfer or rental car. The airport has no train station, and the trains stop at Albufeira-Ferreiras, inland from the beaches, so a taxi or transfer is simplest after a late flight.

Is there a train from Faro airport to Albufeira?

Not directly. The airport has no station, so you first take a bus or taxi to Faro station. From there trains reach Albufeira-Ferreiras in roughly 15 to 25 minutes, and a bus or taxi covers the last leg to town.

Is it cheaper to take the bus or a taxi?

A bus is cheaper per person, but a taxi or shared transfer can match it for a group of three or four with luggage. Compare the current fares and the walk at both ends before you decide.

Do you need a car for Albufeira?

Not for the old town or Oura, where walking, taxis and buses are enough. A car helps if you stay at Falésia, want Benagil and Lagos in the same week or travel with a lot of luggage.

How do tolls work on the A22 motorway?

The A22 uses electronic tolls with no booths. Portugal's official tolls portal lists options for foreign plates, and rental companies usually fit a device or offer a toll package. Ask when you collect the car.
