The short answer: fly, with a spare day
For nearly every visitor the way to the Loyalty Islands is a short Air Calédonie flight from Noumea's international airport at La Tontouta. The tourism board puts the average flight time at around 40 minutes between Noumea and the islands, and recommends flying to Ouvéa, Lifou and Maré for convenience. The ferry exists, but it takes at least four hours, runs only a few times a week and suits travelers who have time to spare. For the islands themselves, start with the Loyalty Islands travel guide, and for the bigger picture see New Caledonia.
The one rule worth repeating: do not schedule an island departure for the same day as an international flight home. The tourism board says the transfer of domestic flights has led to opposition from part of the population and may cause temporary disruptions, including short-term closures of some island airfields. A spare night in Noumea turns a canceled flight into an inconvenience instead of a missed connection.
The La Tontouta change: what it means for your plan
Until early 2026, island flights left from the small Magenta airport south of the city, and many guidebooks and websites still say so. Since 2 March 2026 they leave from La Tontouta, which the tourism board describes as having a longer runway and less exposure to weather, factors expected to improve regularity. International travelers can now continue to the Loyalty Islands or the Isle of Pines without going into Noumea first, thanks to simplified connections. Domestic passengers use dedicated temporary areas that follow the same route as international passengers, with separation of the flows scheduled for mid-2026.
The practical effects are three. First, if you arrive internationally and fly to an island the same day, check the minimum connection time with the airline when you book a combined itinerary; the tourism board says such itineraries can be booked through travel agencies and usual booking partners, and domestic-only journeys through the Air Calédonie website. Second, if you sleep in Noumea before an island flight, plan about 45 minutes to the airport; the tourism board lists the Tontouta Express shuttle at 500 XPF per journey with four fixed stops and schedules coordinated with domestic flights. Third, ignore advice that mentions Magenta unless it is about Air Océania, which the tourism board says flies to Lifou from Magenta.
Because the change was contested, check recent news before you go. The situation page on the tourism site notes that Air Calédonie reported disruptions around the transition and a progressive resumption of flights to the Isle of Pines from 30 March 2026. The same tourism board describes the archipelago as fully open to travelers, with no restrictions, while the UK government advises that protests and restrictions can arise at short notice. Treat both as true: the destination is open, and schedules can slip.
Flying to Lifou, Maré or Ouvéa
Each island has its own airfield: Wanaham in the north of Lifou, La Roche on Maré and Ouloup in the south-central part of Ouvéa. The Isle of Pines uses Moué. The tourism board's flight status board on 28 September 2026 listed the Isle of Pines and Lifou as normal, Ouvéa as resumed and Maré La Roche as canceled, which shows how quickly the picture can change. Check the board and the airline's site in the days before you leave and again on the morning of departure.
The Air Calédonie Pass is worth a look if you plan more than one island. The tourism board says it offers discounted flights between Noumea and Maré, Lifou, Ouvéa and the Isle of Pines, and that the Le Pass offer books four flights from Noumea to two different destinations. The pass design implies that a second island usually means returning through Noumea, so price it against single tickets and against the time you would spend moving. If you only visit one island, single tickets are simpler. Compare fares on the airline's site, since no fares are quoted here.
Pack with the flight in mind. Check the airline's current baggage rules, keep essentials such as medication and a charger in cabin luggage, and arrive at La Tontouta with enough margin for the shuttle and check-in. On arrival, rental cars, scooters and hotel or tribe shuttles are the usual ways to reach your stay, and the tourism board advises booking transport in advance. A car is recommended on Maré, as covered in where to stay in the Loyalty Islands.
Taking the ferry
The Betico 2 ferry leaves from the Noumea ferry terminal. According to the tourism board, it serves Lifou at the port of Wé several times a week in a minimum of four hours, and Maré on a direct journey of around four hours, also several times a week. The Isle of Pines is served with regular weekend departures taking about two hours 30. The operator's website was in maintenance on the day this page was checked, so confirm current timetables, fares and baggage rules on the operator's channels before you plan around a sailing.
The ferry makes sense in three cases: you have days to spare and want a slower arrival, a flight is canceled and a sailing exists, or you want a second way back as a backup. It makes less sense if your trip is short, if you are prone to seasickness on open water or if you need to be at the airport at a fixed time. The tourism board calls the flight the most convenient way to reach Ouvéa, so weigh the ferry for that island carefully. If you plan to use the ferry for the Isle of Pines, read the Isle of Pines guide, where both modes are an option.
Booking order and who should choose what
Book in this order: first the island flights, since seats and the pass rules shape everything else; then the room, with your host or hotel told about your flight times; then the car or shuttle on the island; and last the Noumea nights before and after. If your international flight arrives late, ask the airline whether the domestic connection can be booked on the same itinerary, because a combined booking gives you a single provider to call if something slips.
Choose the flight if you have fewer than eight days, if you are visiting more than one island or if you are sensitive to sea motion. Choose the ferry if you want a slow trip, if you travel with a lot of luggage that the airline might limit, or if you have flexible days at both ends. Families with small children tend to prefer the short flight, and travelers on a very tight budget should compare the airline pass with the ferry fare once both are published for their dates. Whichever you pick, a flexible fare or refundable room is worth the small premium on this route.
If a flight is canceled: a short playbook
Start with the airline, not a third party: Air Calédonie says it informs passengers directly of operational changes, and the tourism board advises checking real-time updates on the La Tontouta airport website and the airline's site. Ask about the next available flight, and check whether the Betico ferry sails on the day you need. Tell your host or hotel as soon as you know, because transfers and meals depend on your arrival time. If you are connecting to an international flight, call the international airline early; a rebooking is easier before the flight departs than after.
Keep the paperwork. Insurers usually require you to contact the travel provider first, and the UK government says you should ask providers about refunds and changes. The tourism board says travel or health insurance with at least 30,000 euros of cover is mandatory in New Caledonia, and a policy with trip disruption cover helps with canceled flights and missed connections. Compare options in the travel insurance guide, and read the exclusions on unrest and strikes before you buy.
Costs and paperwork to settle early
No fares are quoted here, because airline and ferry prices change and the operators publish them directly. Compare the airline pass with single tickets and with the ferry fare for your dates, and ask whether a combined international and domestic booking protects the connection if the first flight is late. Carry your passport and your insurance document on the day, keep your accommodation address and your host's phone number handy for the airfield pickup, and screenshot your booking in case mobile coverage is weak on arrival. Cash in CFP francs covers small purchases on the island, as covered in money in New Caledonia.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is relying on a guide that still says Magenta. The second is scheduling an island departure on the same day as an international flight. The third is assuming the ferry is a quick alternative; it takes at least four hours. The fourth is booking an island room without arranging the airfield transfer. The fifth is traveling without cash, since the tourism board advises carrying cash on the Loyalty Islands and the Isle of Pines. The last is skipping a data plan: set one up with the phones and data guide, and see getting around for the territory's other transport options.
Perguntas frequentes
How do you get to the Loyalty Islands from Noumea?
By Air Calédonie flight from La Tontouta airport, about 40 minutes, or by the Betico 2 ferry from the Noumea ferry terminal, which takes at least 4 hours to Lifou and about 4 hours direct to Maré. The tourism board recommends flying for Ouvéa, Lifou and Maré.
Do domestic flights leave from Magenta or La Tontouta?
La Tontouta since 2 March 2026. Domestic flights to the Loyalty Islands and the Isle of Pines moved there from Magenta, so international travelers can connect without going into Noumea. Some older guides still name Magenta, and Air Océania lists Lifou flights from Magenta.
Are flights to the Loyalty Islands reliable?

Is there a flight pass for the Loyalty Islands?
Yes. The Air Calédonie Pass offers discounted flights between Noumea and Maré, Lifou, Ouvéa and the Isle of Pines, and Le Pass books four flights from Noumea to two destinations. Check the airline site for terms and prices.
Can you take the ferry to Lifou or Maré?
Yes. The Betico 2 sails from the Noumea ferry terminal several times a week, with Lifou served at the port of Wé in a minimum of 4 hours and Maré direct in about 4 hours. Check the operator's current timetable before planning.
