Brouwerij De Prael is a brewery taproom and pub on Oudezijds Armsteeg in Amsterdam’s Red Light District, a short walk from the city’s central station. Settle in among dark wood, brick walls and vintage objects, then choose from the brewery’s traditional Dutch and north-western European beers. A flight lets you sample four varieties with staff guidance. The kitchen serves pub food and Dutch classics, including meatballs in gravy and bitterballen. De Prael also employs people who face barriers to finding work, giving the brewery a clear social purpose.

A taproom in the Red Light District

De Prael’s taproom is on Oudezijds Armsteeg, down an alley in the Red Light District. Inside, dark wooden furniture, brick walls and vintage objects give the large room the feel of an old-fashioned beer hall. The brewery occupies a historic building on a site associated with Amsterdam’s early brewing trade; the property was once an auction house.

The taproom opened in 2011, following the brewery’s founding in 2002. It sits close to the central station, making it an easy stop while exploring the old centre. The alley location can be easy to miss among the surrounding streets, so check the address before setting off.

Traditional beers and a tasting flight

De Prael focuses on established beer styles from the Netherlands and north-western Europe. Its range includes blond beers, IPAs, stouts, weizens, tripels and stronger styles such as barleywine and quadrupel. The brewery also makes seasonal beers and commissions for local businesses. Its beers are named after Dutch folk singers.

A flight is a practical way to try four different beers in one visit. Staff can explain what to expect from each pour, which helps if you are choosing between lighter beers and more robust styles. The taproom serves food alongside the beer, including Dutch pub dishes such as bitterballen and meatballs in gravy.

Work with a social purpose

De Prael was founded by Arno Kooy and Fer Kok, who had worked in psychiatric care. The brewery’s employment mission is to give meaningful work to people with mental health histories and others who face barriers in the job market. Its income is reinvested in the business rather than relying on grants.

That purpose is part of the brewery’s identity, alongside its traditional recipes and its city-centre taproom. A visit can include a meal or a beer flight, or you can book ahead for a guided brewery tour to learn more about its history and work.
