Stay at Medano Beach for a first trip: it has the calm swimming beach and easy walking to restaurants. Choose Downtown and the Marina for nightlife and boat departures, Pedregal for quiet views, and the Corridor for large resorts and a rental car. Book early for December to April and avoid August to October if you hate storm risk.

How to choose

Cabo San Lucas is built around a marina, a main swimming beach and a string of resorts, so your base decides how much you walk, how loud your nights are and whether you need a car. The Cabo San Lucas travel guide covers the sights, and this page settles where to sleep. For the wider picture, see the Mexico guide.

Three questions narrow the choice. Do you want to walk to the beach and to dinner, or are you happy to take a taxi? Do you want nightlife at the door, or a quiet room? And are you here only for Cabo, or do you plan day trips to San José del Cabo, Todos Santos or the reef at Cabo Pulmo?

Prices are shown as relative bands: $ for budget, $$ for mid-range and $$$ for upscale. They compare areas with each other rather than quote nightly rates. The calendar moves them more than the area: December to April, when whales and winter visitors arrive, is dearest, and August to October is cheapest but carries hurricane risk. The US National Hurricane Center lists the eastern Pacific season as 15 May to 30 November, with activity peaking in late August.

The marina and the streets around it are the busiest part of Cabo San Lucas, and the marina is where boats to the arch depart (see the El Arco boat tour guide for the protected-area fee and swim rules). Water taxis and tour boats leave from the docks, and the arch is a short boat ride away. Restaurants, bars and shops line the waterfront and the main streets behind it, so you can walk to dinner and a drink without a car.

This is the best base for travelers who want to go out in the evening and take boat trips in the morning. Rooms are often more affordable than on Medano Beach, and you can find a mix of hotels and apartments. The trade-off is noise. Bars and street activity run late, especially on weekends and on cruise-ship days, so light sleepers should ask for a room away from the street.

The beach is not at your door. Medano is a short taxi or a walk of roughly 15 to 30 minutes from the marina, and the Pacific beaches nearby are not for swimming. If a beach morning is your priority, stay at Medano instead.

Evite se you want a quiet night or a beach at your door. Medano Beach or Pedregal suits you better.

Choose Downtown when the marina and water taxis come first and the beach can wait.

Medano is the main beach of Cabo San Lucas and the place where swimming is generally calmest. Resorts, beach clubs and restaurants line the sand, and you can walk to the marina in roughly 15 to 30 minutes or take a short taxi. For families and first-time visitors, it is the most balanced base.

The beach is lively by day, with water sports, boat departures and vendors, and it stays busy into the evening near the clubs. Rooms on the sand are among the most expensive in town, and rates rise sharply between December and April. A room a block back, away from the music, often costs less and is quieter.

If you have children or want the simplest holiday, this is the one. If you are looking for solitude, the beach is not the place. The Cabo San Lucas travel guide explains which beaches to swim at and which to skip.

Evite se you want an uncrowded beach or a quiet room. Pedregal or a stay in San José del Cabo suits you better.

3. Pedregal

Best for
Couples, quiet stays

Pedregal is the hillside neighborhood above the town, with homes and boutique hotels that look over the harbor and the arch. It is quiet at night, and many rooms have views, so it suits couples and anyone who wants calm after a day on the water.

You trade convenience for quiet. The area is hilly, so most visitors take taxis or ride apps to dinner and to the beach, and walking back up can be steep. Choose a hotel that offers a shuttle or is close to the main road, and check how you will get down to the marina.

It is a good base if you are renting a car or planning to spend your evenings at a pool and a few restaurants rather than at bars. It is a poor choice if you want to walk everywhere.

Evite se you want to walk to the beach, restaurants and nightlife. Downtown or Medano suits you better.

4. The Tourist Corridor

Best for
Resorts, rental-car trips
Beach
Rocky coves, some swim bays
To airport
About 25–40 min
Price band
$$$

The Tourist Corridor is the coast road between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, lined with large resorts, golf courses and a few protected bays. It is the best choice for travelers who want a resort stay with pools, a spa and several restaurants on site, and who do not mind driving or taking a taxi.

Some coves on the Corridor have calm water for swimming and snorkeling, but others are rocky or have strong surf, so check the conditions at the specific beach. Resorts often supply shuttles to Cabo San Lucas, and the airport is closer than from the marina. The distance from the town means dinners and nights out usually involve a ride.

This base works well for couples and families who mostly stay in the resort and add a boat trip or two. It works less well if you want to wander, since you will depend on a car or a taxi.

Evite se you want to walk to restaurants and the marina. Medano or Downtown suits you better.

Stay here when your trip is mostly resort days with a boat trip or two.

Which base suits which trip?

Match the base to the trip you are taking. A first visit with boat days and a few nights out fits Medano Beach or the marina. A honeymoon or a quiet week fits Pedregal or a resort on the Corridor. A group of friends who want to go out every night should stay near the marina, and families with young children usually do best on Medano Beach, where the water is calmer and meals are close.

If you are combining Cabo with other stops, think about where you will sleep before you collect the rental car. A hotel near the marina lets you skip the car for the first days, while a stay on the Corridor or in Pedregal makes more sense when the car is part of the plan. Ask whether parking costs extra, and compare the total, not only the nightly rate.

Mistakes to avoid when you book

The most common mistake is booking "near Medano Beach" and finding the hotel is a taxi ride from the sand. Medano is a long beach, and the hotels along its far ends are a long walk from the marina restaurants. Open the map, check the distance to the water and to the marina, and read recent reviews for the words "noise" and "walk."

The second is picking the cheapest marina room for a quiet trip. Bars and street activity run late, and cruise-ship days add crowds, so a light sleeper should ask for a room facing away from the street or choose Pedregal. The third is booking a Corridor resort and then planning to walk to dinner. The Corridor is built around the coast road and the resorts, not around walking, and a taxi each way adds up over a week.

The fourth is assuming every beach in front of a hotel is for swimming. Several Pacific-facing beaches have strong currents, and some Corridor coves are rocky or rough. Ask the hotel which beach is safe for swimming on your dates, and follow any flags. The fifth is booking for the cheap season without cover: August to October is when storms are likeliest, so a flexible rate and travel insurance that names storm delays are worth the extra cost.

How a rental car changes the choice

A car is the lever that moves the decision. If you will rent one for most of the week, Pedregal and the Corridor become far easier, parking at the hotel matters more than the beach, and a stay a block back from the marina can cost less for the same nights. If you will not rent a car, stay in the marina or on Medano, and use taxis and boats for the rest. Todos Santos and Cabo Pulmo are the two trips that really need a car or a tour. Our Cabo San Lucas travel guide lists both as day trips from the town.

If you rent for only part of the stay, collect the car on the day you leave town and return it before you move base, so you pay for parking only when you need it.

Booking tips

Book early for December to April, when winter visitors and whale season fill hotels, and for Christmas, New Year and Easter. If you prefer lower rates and can accept storm risk, August to October is cheapest, so consider flexible or refundable rates and compare cover on our travel insurance page.

Check what the rate includes. Some resorts add daily fees, and all-inclusive packages vary in what they cover, so compare totals rather than the nightly number. If you are tempted by "free" airport transfers or tours offered at arrival booths, read the terms: some are tied to a timeshare presentation. A transfer booked in advance and a rental car through getting around Mexico avoid that.

Before you go, add an eSIM for maps and ride apps from the airport, and check the visas and entry rules for your passport. If you cannot decide between Cabo and its quieter neighbor, our Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo comparison sets out the trade-offs, and the El Arco boat tour guide helps you plan the best day on the water.

Perguntas frequentes

What is the best area to stay in Cabo San Lucas?

Medano Beach for most first trips. It has the one beach where swimming is generally safe, restaurants and beach clubs on the sand, and the marina is a short walk or taxi away.

Is it better to stay in Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo?

Cabo San Lucas for the marina, beach clubs and boat trips, San José del Cabo for a quieter historic center. The two towns are roughly 30 to 40 minutes apart by car. Our town-by-town comparison covers the trade-offs, so use this page only to pick a base inside Cabo San Lucas.

Can you swim at the beaches in Cabo San Lucas?

Medano Beach is the main swimming beach. Pacific-facing beaches, including Divorce Beach by the arch, have strong currents and are not for swimming; local authorities closed Divorce Beach temporarily in August 2026. Ask your hotel or boat captain about conditions.

Do I need a car in Cabo San Lucas?

Not if you stay near the marina or Medano, which are walkable, with taxis and rides for the rest. A car helps for the Corridor, Pedregal and day trips to Todos Santos or Cabo Pulmo.

When should I book a hotel in Cabo San Lucas?

As soon as dates are firm for December to April, when whales and winter visitors fill rooms, and for holiday weeks. August to October can be cheaper but carries hurricane risk.
