Antakalnis Cemetery is a leafy burial ground in Vilnius, with graves of soldiers from Lithuania, Poland, Germany and Russia, as well as notable Lithuanian figures. Its paths pass rows of crosses and tombstones bearing inscriptions in Lithuanian, Russian and Polish. The carefully maintained grounds invite a quiet visit and a closer look at Lithuania’s wartime history. Take time to read the inscriptions and pause at the military graves, where flowers are still laid at the former Soviet soldiers’ monument site.

Military graves and remembrance

Antakalnis Cemetery contains graves of soldiers from Poland, Germany, Russia and Lithuania. The grounds hold tombstones connected with the First and Second World Wars, as well as graves associated with those killed by Soviet special forces on 13 January 1991.

A monument to Soviet soldiers has been removed, but flowers are still laid at the site. It remains a place for quiet reflection on war and its human cost.

Inscriptions and notable graves

Crosses and tombstones across the cemetery carry inscriptions in Lithuanian, Russian and Polish. Reading them offers a closer view of the people remembered here and the different communities represented among the graves.

Antakalnis is also the resting place of notable Lithuanians, including politicians, artists and scientists. Some of the cemetery’s monuments are works of art in their own right.
