The observation deck is in the Moscow Suburb, south of Riga’s Old Town. The area lies along a road that historically connected Riga with Moscow. From the platform, the view takes in both the historic centre and parts of the city that look quite different from it, including Central Market and the Daugava River.

At 65 metres, the deck gives a broad perspective across Riga. You can also pick out the National Library and Railway Bridge, as well as the city’s less-developed districts. Short descriptions in several languages help identify sights from above.

The Academy of Sciences tower dates to the mid-20th century and has a monumental Soviet-era style. Its design is sometimes compared with other grand buildings from that period and is also known by the nickname “Stalin’s Cake.” The tower is a distinctive part of the view as well as the place to take it in.

For the observation deck, take the right-hand lift to the 15th floor, then continue on foot up a few flights. The stairs may be dimly lit, so take care as you make your way to the viewing area.
