Sugimoto Temple is a small Tendai Buddhist temple in eastern Kamakura, regarded as the city’s oldest.

Sugimoto Temple is a small Tendai Buddhist temple in eastern Kamakura, regarded as the city’s oldest. Founded in 734, it predates the Kamakura shogunate. A mossy stone staircase leads toward the wooden main hall, built in 1677 and topped with a thatched roof. Look for the guardian statues at the gate, the temple’s colorful flags and a quiet lookout away from the main route. The calm grounds also provide a place for meditation.

A temple older than Kamakura’s shogunate

Sugimoto Temple was founded in 734, during the Nara period, and is considered Kamakura’s oldest Buddhist temple. It belongs to the Tendai school. The temple is also the first of the 33 sacred Kannon sites in the Bando region, a pilgrimage route established during the Kamakura period.

Three statues of eleven-faced Kannon are its principal images. The site’s long history is also visible at the main gate, where Nio statues, the guardians of the Buddha, remain on view.

The mossy approach and wooden hall

A staircase coated in moss forms the approach to the temple buildings. Take time on the way up to notice the steps and the green surface that has developed over the years.

The main hall is a compact wooden building dating to 1677, with a thatched roof. The roof is replaced about every 20 years. Colorful flags and a quiet lookout add to the grounds beyond the main route. The peaceful setting also gives visitors space to meditate inside; a cushion can make sitting more comfortable.
