At Catania’s Le Ciminiere cultural complex, the Museo Storico dello Sbarco in Sicilia 1943 tells the story of the Allied invasion of Sicily during World War II. Recreated streets, a bomb shelter and a German bunker set the scene before displays of uniforms, weapons, photographs and invasion maps trace the fighting. Interactive elements and English text help bring the events into focus. Allow at least two hours to explore; visitors with a strong interest in the campaign can spend longer among the exhibits.

The museum focuses on the Allied invasion of Sicily, known as Operation Husky. Allied forces landed on the island on 10 July 1943 and fought to gain control from German forces. The displays follow events in Sicily through 8 September, placing the campaign within the wider history of World War II and Italy’s liberation from German occupation.

Maps help explain the military movements, while photographs and objects show how the conflict affected the island. The collection includes material on the different armies involved, as well as uniforms and weapons. Together, these exhibits trace both the campaign and its impact on people in Sicily.

A walk through wartime Sicily

The opening rooms use reconstructed settings to introduce civilian life during the war. A model Sicilian street, period notices and wartime sounds create a sense of the town before visitors move through exhibits about the conflict. One section recreates an air raid shelter, followed by a bomb-damaged alley and the remains of a German bunker.

Further displays combine artifacts, photographs, diagrams and film footage. Animated maps condense the invasion’s movements into a short sequence, helping visitors follow the campaign before exploring the detail in the surrounding exhibits. Photographs by war photographer Phil Stern are also part of the collection.

English text is available alongside Italian, and an audio guide is included in the entrance fee. Some documentaries and interviews with veterans are in Italian without English subtitles, so the written text and guide are useful for visitors who do not speak Italian.
