Lapangan Pancasila, better known as Simpang Lima, is a green square of about 3.3 hectares in central Semarang. Simpang Lima means five junctions, and five main roads meet here: Jalan Pahlawan, Ahmad Yani, Gajah Mada, Ahmad Dahlan and Pandanaran. Locals jog and cycle on the square in the morning and gather with their families in the evening. After dark, decorated becak, scooters and electric roadsters light up the edges, and food stalls around the square serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Malls, hotels, a mosque and government offices stand along its sides.

Five roads meet at one square

Simpang Lima means five junctions. The square sits where five of Semarang's main roads converge: Jalan Pahlawan, Jalan Ahmad Yani, Jalan Gajah Mada, Jalan Ahmad Dahlan and Jalan Pandanaran. Because of this position, many people call it the heart of the city, and it is known as the city's 0 km point.

The open green field covers about 3.3 hectares and belongs to the Semarang city government. It is open to the public and is also called Lapangan Pancasila. Offices, malls, hotels, houses of worship, a cinema and food courts surround it, so the square works as a meeting place for people from all over the city.

Morning and evening on the square

In the morning the square belongs mostly to local people. They jog and cycle around it, and the open ground suits light exercise. Families also come for gatherings and outdoor activities, and children use the space for roller skating and cycling.

The mood changes after dark. Rows of decorated becak line up with coloured lights, and you can rent one to go around the square. Scooters and small motorised rides are available too, as are the electric roadsters, which move slowly and carry passengers. Live music and local events are often held here. The square also serves as a venue for events at national and provincial level.

Things to do with children

The square has more than a walking loop. It has a playground, a basketball court, a volleyball court, a tennis court and a skateboarding area, along with cycling lanes. On some days there is painting for children and badminton, and stalls sell traditional toys. Children can spend a good part of an afternoon here without leaving the grounds.

Public restrooms are available, and the entrance is wheelchair accessible. Dogs are allowed.

Eating around Simpang Lima

Food stalls and vendors ring the square, and they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Many dishes are available at affordable prices. Soto betawi is one dish you will find at the stalls. Cafes and restaurants also stand along the surrounding streets.

A stall meal is a simple way to end an evening walk. Eat after you have seen the lights, when the area is at its liveliest.
