How to choose

Munnar is a spread-out hill district, not a single village, so your base decides how much you drive, how quiet your nights are and how easily you reach the main sights. The Munnar travel guide covers the places to see, and this page settles where to sleep. For the wider picture of the trip, see the Kerala travel guide.

Three questions narrow the choice. Do you want restaurants and buses close by, or a quiet view and a hired car? Do you want waterfalls and a short walk, or a lake and tea gardens? And is this a short stop between the backwaters and the coast, or a few days of doing little? The answers point to different corners of the district.

Prices are shown as relative bands: $ for budget, $$ for mid-range and $$$ for upscale. They compare areas with each other rather than quote nightly rates. The calendar moves them more than the area: the cool months and school holidays are dearest, and the monsoon months are cheapest, with the caveat of wet roads. Kerala Tourism lists October to March as the best time for the Mattupetty area and describes June to September as heavy rainfall that may limit some activities.

Which base suits which trip?

Match the base to the trip you are taking.

  • A short stop with public transport: Munnar Town. The bus stand, restaurants and taxis start there.

  • A couple's trip with a valley view: Chinnakanal, where resorts and homestays look over the slope.

  • A family or photography trip: the lake road at Mattupetty and Kundala, with a dam, a lake and tea gardens.

  • A slow, quiet stay with a driver: an estate in Devikulam or the Lockhart Gap area.

  • A first trip with no car and two nights: one night in town and one on an estate, which gives you both a market and a view.

If you are combining Munnar with other places, think about the transfer. Munnar in 2 days shows how the days run from each base, and Munnar or Ooty helps if you are choosing between two hill stations.

Os números correspondem às seções abaixo.

1. Munnar Town

Munnar Town is the market hub, with the bus stand, restaurants, shops and the main road junction. It is the easiest base if you travel by public transport, since buses and taxis start here and you can reach most viewpoints by hired car in a short drive.

The trade-off is traffic and noise. The main road is busy with tour buses and jeeps, and the views from town rooms are often of other buildings rather than tea hills. You can find a quiet room away from the junction, but you will not wake up in a tea garden.

It is the best base for short stays, for travelers without a car and for anyone who wants to eat out. If you have a night or two between Kochi and Alappuzha, the town is practical.

Evite se you want valley views and quiet nights. Chinnakanal or Devikulam suits you better.

2. Chinnakanal

Best for
Valley views, waterfalls
Walkable
Short lanes only
To airport
About 110 km to Cochin
Price band
$$

Chinnakanal sits on the slopes toward the Top Station side, with resorts and homestays that look over a valley. The Power House Waterfall is close, and the road continues to viewpoints and tea plantations. It is a good mix of scenery and access, with the town a short taxi ride away.

You will need a taxi for dinner unless your resort has a restaurant, and nights can be cool and foggy. The roads are narrow, so ask the property for pick-up and note the check-in hours, which are often early because driving after dark can be slow.

This base suits couples, light hikers and anyone who wants a view without being too far out. It is less suited to travelers who want to walk to dinner or who rely on buses.

Evite se you want to walk to shops and restaurants. Munnar Town suits you better.

3. Mattupetty and Kundala

Best for
Lake and tea road
Walkable
Short walks near the lake
To airport
About 110 km to Cochin
Price band
$$

The road to Mattupetty and Kundala runs along a dam, a lake and some of the area's best tea gardens. Kerala Tourism describes Mattupetty as a dam and lake with pedal and speed boats for hire, tea estates with guided tours and the Indo-Swiss livestock research farm. Stays here are quiet, the air is cool and the roads are scenic, making it a good base for photography and short drives to Top Station.

Meals are mostly at your stay, because restaurants are few, so check whether the rate includes food. You will also be farther from the bus stand, so taxis are the way to get around. Mornings are the best time for views, before clouds roll in.

It suits families, photographers and anyone who wants a calm base with scenery on the doorstep. It is a poor choice for people who want nightlife or late dinners.

Evite se you want nightlife or a lively street. Munnar Town suits you better.

4. Devikulam and Lockhart Gap

Best for
Quiet estate stays
Walkable
No, estate grounds
To airport
About 110 km to Cochin
Price band
$$$

Devikulam and the Lockhart Gap area have the quietest stays, often in tea-estate bungalows or small cottage resorts with large grounds. Mornings are misty, the air is cold at night and the scenery is the point. Many properties offer tea tastings and guided walks.

This is not a base for getting around cheaply. You will rely on the property's car or a taxi, and public buses are few. Roads can be rough, so confirm access with your host and plan to arrive in daylight.

It suits slow trips, honeymoons and travelers who want to read, walk and listen to birds. It is a poor choice for people who like to explore without a driver.

Evite se you depend on buses or want a lively town. Munnar Town suits you better.

What to ask a host before you book

Munnar properties differ more than their prices suggest, and a few questions settle most problems before they start.

  • How do I get there? Ask for the last stretch of road in detail: is it paved, how steep is it, and can a small car manage it? If the answer is vague, plan on a driver.

  • What does the rate include? Meals, tea walks, a pick-up and parking are often priced separately, and outside the town your own kitchen may be the only restaurant.

  • What time is the latest safe check-in? Mountain roads are slow in fog and rain, so confirm a time and tell the host if your plan changes.

  • Is there heating or a blanket? Nights are cool at altitude in the cooler months.

  • What happens if the road closes? Landslides are a monsoon risk, so ask about the cancellation and rebooking policy.

  • Can you arrange the park slot and a driver? Some hosts will, which saves a day of messages.

Arrival, roads and safety

Whichever base you choose, plan the arrival with care. Kerala Tourism lists Cochin International Airport as the nearest airport, about 110 km away, and Ernakulam as the nearest railway station, about 130 km away, with Aluva also named as the closest station on its Mattupetty page. Munnar is reached by road from Ernakulam and Kottayam. If you are starting in Kochi, the Kochi where to stay guide covers a night before the climb.

A lush green hillside with a stream running through it, Munnar
A lush green hillside with a stream running through it, Munnar

The road climbs through hairpin bends, and it can take longer than the map suggests, especially on weekends and in rain. Reach Munnar in daylight if you can, and avoid the ghat road after dark in the monsoon, when fog and landslides are most likely. Ask your host whether they can arrange a pick-up, and confirm the last safe check-in time.

Some estate roads are steep and narrow, and a small hatchback may struggle on loose ground. If you are renting a self-drive car, check the access road with the property before you book. Many visitors prefer a driver who knows the roads, and the cost is often worth it for the peace of mind. Keep water and a charged phone with you, because shops and signal can be scarce between estates.

Plan your meals too. In town, restaurants are easy to find, but outside it you may have only the property's kitchen, so ask about dinner times and whether you need to order in advance. If you have dietary needs, tell the host before you arrive.

Seasons, rain and Eravikulam

The cool months are the main season and the busiest. Rooms fill for school holidays and long weekends, and the best views are in the clear mornings. The monsoon is quieter and cheaper, but the hills are wet and misty, some activities are limited, and roads can close. If you choose the monsoon, pick a base with a covered terrace and a restaurant, such as a town hotel or a resort with its own kitchen, because walking out for dinner is less appealing.

If a visit to Eravikulam National Park is part of your trip, note that Kerala Tourism says the park is closed in February and March each year for the Nilgiri tahr calving season. Base yourself in town or at Chinnakanal for an easy early start on a park day.

Booking tips

Book early for the cool months and for school holidays, when rooms fill. If you prefer lower rates and can accept rain, the monsoon is quieter, so choose a flexible rate and compare cover on the travel insurance page, since landslides can close roads.

Check what the rate includes. Some estate stays include meals and tea walks, and some charge separately. Ask about road access and parking, and confirm whether the host can arrange a driver. Compare totals, not just the nightly number.

Before you go, set up an eSIM because signal can be patchy between estates, and check the India e-Visa page for your passport. Read the guide on getting around India for trains to Kochi and onward road links.

Perguntas frequentes

What is the best area to stay in Munnar?

Munnar Town for ease if you rely on buses and taxis, and an estate stay at Chinnakanal or Devikulam for views and quiet. Most sights are a drive from any base, so choose by the mood you want.

Is it better to stay in Munnar Town or on a tea estate?

Town for convenience, food and early buses; an estate for views, cool air and silence. If you have a car and two nights, split them: one in town, one in the hills.

Do I need a car in Munnar?

Not strictly. Taxis and jeeps are easy to hire for a day, and buses connect the main points. A car or driver makes sense if you stay outside town, since evenings are quiet and distances are long.

Is Munnar cold at night?

Cool to cold, especially from November to February, when nights can feel chilly at altitude. Pack a jacket and check if your room has a blanket or heating.

When should I book a stay in Munnar?

As soon as dates are fixed for the cool months and school holidays, when rooms fill. The monsoon from June to September is quieter and cheaper, though road disruption is possible.

How far is Munnar from Kochi airport?

Kerala Tourism lists Cochin International Airport as the nearest airport, about 110 km away, and Ernakulam as the nearest railway station, about 130 km away. The road climbs through hairpin bends, so allow extra time and arrive in daylight.

What should you ask a Munnar host before booking?

Ask about the last stretch of road, what the rate includes (meals, pick-up, tea walks), the latest safe check-in time, heating or blankets, and what happens if a monsoon landslide closes the road.
