Basilique Sainte-Clotilde is a neo-Gothic church at 23B Rue Las Cases in Paris’s 7th arrondissement, beside Square Samuel Rousseau. Built between 1846 and 1857, it was the first church in Paris in this architectural style. Its twin spires rise 70 metres above the square, while inside, stained glass, sculptures, frescoes and chapels reward a closer look. Entry is free, and the quiet, spacious interior makes this a gentle pause on a walk through the area or toward the Rodin Museum.

A neo-Gothic church in 19th-century Paris

Construction of Sainte-Clotilde began in 1846 and was completed in 1857. It was the first church in Paris built in the neo-Gothic style. François Gaud, an architect from Cologne, began the project and drew inspiration from the choir of the cathedral in his home city. Théodore Ballu completed the work, designing the façade and the two spires.

The basilica stands beside Square Samuel Rousseau, where its tall silhouette is easy to pick out. The twin spires reach 70 metres, giving the church a strong presence in the surrounding streets and green space.

Details to notice inside

Inside, the scale of the church is one of its defining features. Stained-glass windows draw the eye, while smaller windows, sculptures, frescoes and chapels invite a slower look around. The interior also contains devotional details, including relics and symbolism, with places for prayer and reflection.

The basilica’s quiet atmosphere offers a contrast to the activity of Paris outside. Visitors can move through the space at an unhurried pace, pausing at the chapels or taking time to examine the architectural and devotional details. The church is close to the Rodin Museum, so it can fit naturally into a walk in the area.
