St. Michael's Fortress

St.

St. Michael's Fortress sits on a steep hill above the old town of Šibenik, in Croatia. It is the oldest of the city's four fortresses and was part of its defence for centuries. The upper courtyard is now an open-air theatre that seats just over 1,000 people in summer. Come for the view over the rooftops, the sea and the islands, and stay for the tablets and 3D mapping that explain the site. Sunset is the best time for the view.

Origins and the city's defence

St. Michael's is the oldest of Šibenik's four fortresses. It sits on the steep hill above the old town and was part of the city's defence for centuries.

The fortress takes its name from the Church of St. Michael, which stood within its walls from the medieval period. Šibenik was built around this upper point, and the walls and fortresses of the city were linked to its defence system. Much of what you see today dates from the medieval period, with later work, including additions in the 17th century, reshaping it.

Restoration and the open-air theatre

The fortress was restored in 2014, after a long period when it stood unused. An EU-funded revitalisation project had already taken place in the early 2010s.

Today the upper courtyard is an open-air theatre with just over 1,000 seats. It hosts concerts and events in summer. Performers have included Gregory Porter, Morcheeba, Róisín Murphy and Nouvelle Vague.

The theatre is one of the reasons the fortress has become a venue for cultural life in the city, as well as a place to learn about its past.

Inside the fortress

A ticket gives access to tablets with explanations and interactive activities. The site also offers an audio guide that covers its history. The explanations suit both adults and children.

Deep inside the fortress, 3D mapping brings the 15th-century water cisterns to life. It is one of the more unusual parts of the visit, because the history is shown on the spaces themselves.

What you see from the walls

From the walls you look down on the terracotta rooftops of the old town. You can see where the Krka River meets the sea, and the islands scattered across the bay.

Looking up from the fortress, you see St. James's Cathedral from above. The St. John's and Barone fortresses stand nearby on higher ground.

Sunset is the time to come for the view.
