The Medellín Modern Art Museum, known as MAMM, is in the Ciudad del Río district of El Poblado and is dedicated to modern and contemporary art. Its collection holds more than 2,000 works in paintings, photographs, sculptures and videos, by Colombian and international artists. The museum was founded in 1978. For almost thirty years it was based at the Carlos E. Restrepo site. In 2009 it moved to Ciudad del Río, in El Poblado, where it occupies a large city block.

The building has five stories of concrete encased in rusted, perforated steel. Its exterior is one of the first things visitors notice, and it is worth looking at before you go in.

The collection includes more than 2,000 works by Colombian and international artists, in paintings, photographs, sculptures and videos. Débora Arango's works are part of the permanent display. The collection also includes pieces by Remedios Varo and Olga Costa.

Temporary exhibitions bring in local, national and international artists, so the program changes over time. Some displays address Colombian culture and social issues. Past exhibitions and academic programs have included Formas de Libertad by Carlos Motta, which traced milestones of the LGBT movement at local and global levels.

Cinema, events and programs

The museum has a theater where films screen, mostly from Thursday to Sunday. Concerts, live performances, workshops and educational activities also take place here, and the museum hosts private events.

If you visit with a specific interest, check the program before you go, since the cinema and events change from one period to the next.
