Inside the Royal Palace grounds in Phnom Penh, the Silver Pagoda is a Buddhist temple known for its silver-tiled floor and revered Buddha statues. Its name comes from the silver tiles, though much of the floor is covered, so you may see only a small section. Look for the Emerald Buddha and a gold Buddha decorated with diamonds, then walk among the pagoda’s detailed stupas and landscaped grounds. The temple is part of the Royal Palace visit, so you do not need a separate ticket for it.

The Silver Pagoda is in the southern part of Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace compound. Its formal name is Wat Preah Keo Morakot, or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The temple has also been known as Wat Uborsoth Rotannaram, a name connected with its use by the King for worship and prayer. The royal family and officials have held Buddhist ceremonies here.

The temple has a distinct role within the compound: it is a place of worship and royal ceremony, and no monks live there. The Royal Palace remains the King’s official residence, so some areas of the wider compound are closed to the public.

The silver floor and sacred images

More than 5,000 silver tiles give the pagoda its familiar name. Much of the floor is covered to protect it, but a small area near the entrance can offer a glimpse of the tiles. Set expectations accordingly: the silver floor is not fully visible to visitors.

Inside are important Buddha images, including the Emerald Buddha and a gold Buddha adorned with diamonds. The complex also includes four stupas, whose detailed decoration rewards a closer look. The Emerald Buddha is also reflected in the temple’s formal name, connecting the building’s identity to one of its central sacred objects.

Making the visit

The Silver Pagoda is included in the Royal Palace visit, rather than requiring a separate ticket. You can explore the palace grounds and the pagoda as part of the same stop. An English-speaking guide is available for historical context.

Dress modestly by covering your shoulders and knees. Arriving early can mean cooler temperatures and fewer people in the grounds. The site has wheelchair-accessible entrances and restrooms.
